Coolmore Target for 2015 Quezette Stakes Winner Petits Filous

Ciaron Maher is confident keeping his Quezette Stakes 2015 winner Petits Filous to sprint features this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival is the key and will target the Coolmore Stud Stakes in October with the undefeated filly.

A winner of her opening two career starts at Moonee Valley over 1000m, the progressive Street Boss three-year-old stepped up in class and was put to the test in black-type company for the first time at Caulfield Racecourse on PB Lawrence Stakes Day.

She contested the $150,000 Group 3 Lister Quezette Stakes (1100m), jumping from barrier five with top hoop Damien Oliver retaining the ride.

The filly and her jockey made it a hat-trick of wins from as many starts, Petits Filous ($1.85) saluting for the punters as the gutsy odds-on favourite to hold off her challengers and add a stakes victory to her early spring record.

On the line she dug deep and held off a fast-finishing Jalan Jalan ($5), Colin Little’s last start Flemington winner surging late to challenge without success.

In third finishing off the winning Quezette Stakes trifecta was then the Adelaide raider Miss Gunpowder ($6.50), the Phillip Stokes-trained filly doing an  excellent job in her first run outside of South Australia as she targets the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) back at the track on October 10.

Miss Gunpowder was absolutely flying from the gates, Dwayne Dunn taking her up on the speed form her wide draw with Petits Filous also driving up for the lead as well.

The eventual winner took the front running and lead them round the bend after Oliver cuddled her for as long as he could, holding her lead and proving too good to take it out by one and a quarter lengths having absorbed the pressure put on her late.

“She went forward and wanted to travel quite keenly,” winning trainer Maher said post-win.

“She was still in control though.

“They came at her but she was brave enough to fight them off.”

Petits Filous is also officially nominated for the 2015 Thousand Guineas over the mile as well as the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 24.

Maher however confirmed she would be kept to a sprints-only campaign based on her aggressive racing style over the 1100m of the Quezette Stakes.

“Today was a real test for her, and we’ll see how she pulls up and make a plan on the back of that,” he said.

“After a short let-up the Coolmore might be an option for her.

“It will be interesting to see what Damien (Oliver) says.

“Today was the target race and we’ll make the decision on the back of that.

“After looking at her today, she’s just learning a bit, she’s a keen little racehorse and was quite aggressive.

“We’ll definitely keep her at the sprint distance.”

She now heads towards a run down the famous Flemington straight on Victoria Derby Day in the $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on October 31, a race that could also be the target for Chris Waller’s San Domenico Stakes winner in Sydney this weekend Japonisme.
