Sydney Spring Racing continues at Rosehill Gardens today, Saturday August 15, with an eight-race program headlined by the $125,000 Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m).
San Domenico Stakes Day 2015 kicks off at 12:35pm (AEST) with a small but quality field including John Sargent’s Group 1 winner Kirramosa facing off in the first, and continues through until 5pm with Greatwood and Spurtonic the equal 62kg top weights in the card closer.
It is a partly cloudy day at Rosehill with a top of 18 degrees and no rain on the forecast with a Good (4) track to stay, a nice change from the rain-affected courses in Sydney over the past month.

As mentioned, the day’s headline race in Sydney today is the San Domenico Stakes for three-year-olds, which runs quite early on the program as Race 5 (3:00pm) and features the return of Gai Waterhouse’s Golden Slipper winner Vancouver.

Diminutive field but it is full of talent including the odds-on $1.80 favourite Peeping on the rails and running for the first time since a Group 3 fifth in April at Randwick. 2013 Crown Oaks winner Kirramosa is first-up here at big odds ($19) and will improve off whatever she does when up out over more distance.

Wide open field for the second with all but three of the 10 in the mix at single figures for the win. Three are currently equal $4.80 favourites with Marenostro carrying the 59.5kg top weight, the in-form Astronomos shooting for three straight wins and flying John O’Shea-trained Careless in barrier three and coming off a good third at the track from a fortnight ago.

Markets for the third are firmly led by Countryman who has been backed in from $2.50 to $2.25 who is right down in the weights getting in on 54.5kg for jockey Tim Clark here on the back of a win over 1300m here with 56.5kg from the start of the month.

Another open field full of livewire hopes including the market mover Marple Miss ($3.60) who leads betting despite a wide barrier 13 (into 12) draw for the Kris Lees-trained daughter of Not A Single Dobut who returned with a fourth last time out at Canterbury and who is undefeated second-up (2-2-0-0).

All of the eight original final acceptors for the day’s feature remain in the mix with Waterhouse’s Golden Rose – Caulfield Guineas favourite Vancouver ($2.60) looking hard to beat, the Golden Slipper winning colt looking to keep his flawless record (4-4-0-0) in tact first-up from barrier seven with the big 60kg. Biggest threats come from the Chris Waller-trained flyer Japonisme ($4.80) who is up in class but coming off three straight wins and the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Redzel ($4.80).

Penultimate event on the program has two battling for top spot in the markets with current favourite being Tommy Berry’s in-form mount His Majesty ($3.40) drawn ideally in barrier two, the European import coming off a 1200m Gosford win from July 30. Hot on his heels is the market mover Start Wondering ($6 into $3.90) who has some big bets pending despite a wide draw (15) for jockey Hugh Bowman to overcome on the Chris Waller-trained Kiwi expat.

Last Sydney race of the day is a BenchMark 95 over 1800m for the staying types where the narrow $5.50 favourite is Waller’s last start Canterbury winner over 1900m, Whipper six-year-old Beyond Thankful. Plenty of big hopes though including Spurtonic ($6) in gate three and the big market mover Havana Cooler ($21 into $9.50) for Godolphin in his Australian race debut.
