Caulfield Scratchings – 15/08/2015
Total Scratchings: 14
Race 1 (12:20pm) – $90,000 ANZAC Handicap (2000m)
No current scratchings
All nine original acceptors are still in the mix here with one of Waller’s trio, Diametric, the current $2.80 favourite after getting a gun barrier two draw for jockey Damien Oliver. The seven-year-old comes off a third over 2040m at Moonee Valley from the start of the month and the two weeks between runs looks ideal.
Race 2 (12:55pm) – $90,000 Legacy 2015 Badge Appeal Handicap (1600m)
#4 Count Of Limonade (9)
Just the one comes out of this mile handicap where the red hot favourite is Iggimacool ($2.25) who Craig Williams in place of apprentice Thomas Sadler. The mare comes off a narrow second over 1200m at the track from July 25 with 58kg, and she’ll appreciate the drop back to 54kg here and has winning form up to 2100m so the step up in distance shouldn’t worry either. Big market mover though is Onpicalo ($7 into $3.60).
Race 3 (1:30pm) – $80,000 RSL Ramlegh Springs the Heart of Clyde Handicap (1600m)
#5 It’s One (6)
#9 Holy Cow (11)
Even race here with a host of single figure fancies led by the rails-drawn Dig A Pony ($3.10) who Dwayne Dunn rides on 57.5kg, the Peter Moody-trained mare shooting for her first win at the track.
Race 4 (2:05pm) – $80,000 Beveridge Williams Plate (1100m)
#2 Loved Up (9)
#3 Danestroem (4)
Some quality mares line-up in the fourth at Caulfield where markets have Vezalay as the firming market mover and top fancy backed in from $3.20 to near odds-on territory at $2 for her first start since finishing 3.5 lengths away eighth to Lucky Hussler in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley in late March.
Race 5 (2:40pm) – $150,000 Group 3 KS Environmental Vain Stakes (1100m)
#9 Tuscany Hero (8)
The lightly-raced Gold Symphony ($4.40) has his third start here, Peter Moody’s Reward For Effort colt on the improve and second pick in the markets for the day’s opening black-type behind the Danny O’Brien-trained Ragazzo Del Corsa ($3.80).
Race 6 (3:20pm) – $150,000 Group 3 Lister Quezette Stakes (1100m)
#12 Stream Ahead (3)
Nice spring lead-up race for Thousand Guineas-bound fillies to kick off in, the odds-on favourite for which is the undefeated Petits Filous ($2.30 into $1.80). Ciaron Maher’s Street Boss filly is very short but comes off back-to-back Moonee Valley wins over 1000m and is flying. Could be value though in Jalan Jalan ($6.50) for Colin Little, the daughter of Foreplay beating Vain Stakes hope Gold Symphony home last time out.
Race 7 (4:00pm) – $200,000 Group 2 Back to Caulfield P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m)
No current scratchings
No horses out of the day’s feature race with nine gallopers lining up in the weight-for-age showdown where Wez Hunter’s last start Bletchingly Stakes winner Smokin’ Joey ($3.60) leads the markets, the eight-year-old Group 1 champ in career best form and drawn ideally in barrier three. Biggest dangers present as Gai Waterhouse’s returning import Excess Knowledge ($4.40) and the former Hong Kong-trained Dibayani ($5).
Race 8 (4:40pm) – $120,000 Listed Winslow Group Regal Roller Stakes (1200m)
#11 Mr Make Believe (9)
#13 Sardaaj (17)
Good field for the penultimate event on the card where the first emergency, Pressing ($9), now gets a run for local trainer Mick Price. Leading the markets for the sprint clash though at $6 is Yesterday’s Songs out wide but coming off a win with Damien Oliver to ride. Griante ($8.50) is first-up and has class while Stratum Star ($8.50) has an awkward gate but was super consistent last prep.
Race 9 (5:15pm) – $50,000 Australian Defence Force Handicap (1800m)
#7 Mister Moneypenny (9)
#8 Stratigraphy (15)
#10 Tenacitus (10)
#12 Haradafull (1)
#14 Calibrate (12)
Lots out of the last, the BenchMark 78 brining things to a close with all the money on Raposo ($2.80) who has Jordan Childs claiming two kilos, the Patrick Payne-trained four-year-old having run top four in his past six runs.
