2015 Memsie Stakes Target for Regal Winner Setinum

Veteran Bendigo-based trainer Shane Fliedner has ambitious Memsie Stakes 2015 plans for his Regal Roller Stakes winning four-year-old Setinum in a fortnight’s time this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

The progressive Holy Roman Emperor gelding returned to racing on PB Lawrence Stakes Day at Caulfield Racecourse running in the penultimate event on the card, the $120,000 Listed Winslow Group Regal Roller Stakes (1200m).

The field in the handicap sprint was led around by the Stephen Brown-trained Sea Lord who sat just ahead of David Brideoake’s classy Group 1 placed mare Griante.

On the corner as they approached the home straight, Sea Lord continued to lead them around before Griante took charge and looked to be flying as she went to the front 300m out from the line.

She held a narrow lead from Lee & Shannon Hope’s eight-year-old mare Platinum Rocker, who came off a first-up second behind Smokin’ Joey in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at the track from July 25.

While Griante looked the winner, the race opened up to the late swoopers who charged home in the closing stages including Dwayne Dunn’s ride Setinum ($26) who had three quarters of a length to spare over Platinum Rocker ($14) on the line in an upset Regal Roller Stakes quinella.

Finishing off the trifecta was then the well-supported race favourite Yesterday’s Songs ($5).

Dunn, whose original ride Sardaaj was scratched, was a late call-up to ride March’s Bendigo Guineas winner Setinum after fellow hoop Chad Schofield was offered the ride but turned it down to partner the first emergency Pressing (10th) after he made the field.

Fliedner had a high opinion of the horse heading into the Regal Roller Stakes after Setinum’s nice mid-field trial over 800m at Cranbourne in the mud earlier in the week behind Caulfield Guineas winner Rich Enuff.

Having done the job first-up, the trainer now has high hopes Setinum can handle another test and back-up in a fortnight’s time under weight-for-age conditions back at the track for a shot in what is sure to be a hotly contested edition of the $400,000 Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m).

“Since the (Bendigo) Guineas he’s had no luck at all,” Fliedner said post-win.

“He’s come along nicely this time in.

“He went unnoticed a little bit (in a soft trial) but wasn’t far off Bart’s horses and I really liked him.

“Today he was relaxed and he should have a good campaign.

“Without getting carried away, he could go to the Memsie.

“He’s done really well…and he’s not a hard horse to keep fit.”

Last year’s Regal Roller Stakes winner was Hard Stride who beat home Moment Of Change, Peter Moody’s runner-up going onto the Memsie but finishing dead last behind stable mate Dissident when 11th.

Fliedner may be confident the underrated Setinum, who made a terrific return with his big finish, can handle the tough assignment, however Dunn was diplomatic when asked whether he thought the horse capable of winning the Memsie Stakes on August 29.

“He can go to a better class race than this and over a little bit further distance,” Dunn said.

“To his credit today he was powerful and the further he goes the better he’ll get.

“He’s a nice horse, he’s going to win a nice race, but whether that’s a Group 1 at this stage I’m not sure.”
