The Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) is by no means the feature race at Caulfield this weekend, but has attracted a particularly talented field of sixteen plus one emergency; offering exceptional value from a betting standpoint and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.
Yesterday’s Songs ($5.50) will carry winning form into the race and remains outright favourite in 2015 Regal Roller Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au ahead of Sardaaj ($6.50) and emergency runner Pressing ($7.50).
Will Yesterday’s Songs justify favouritism and win the 2015 Regal Roller Stakes or will one of the other many talented runners post a black type win?
Godolphin runner Barbed is a proven performer over course and distance, has been allocated a very manageable 56.5kgs and will leave from the ideal barrier 2 in the Regal Roller Stakes on Saturday. Posting three wins and six minors through nineteen career starts so far, the Canny Lad gelding won the Listed Canterbury Classic (1200m) through an impressive summer preparation. While clearly needing the run when tenth in the Listed June Stakes (1100m) first-up this time, Barbed ran on for a close second in the Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) on July 8th and is sure to receive a gem of a ride from Patrick Moloney on Saturday.
Consistent mare Griante has been confirmed for a racing return in the Regal Roller Stakes, and while needing some luck in transit from the somewhat awkward barrier 12, has trialled well in the lead-up to the race. Returning in autumn for a credible fourth in the Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m), the Good Journey mare charged home to win the Group 3 Wenona Girl Quality (1200m) and finished in the minors in both the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) most recently. Regular hoop Steve Arnold has been confirmed to take the ride on Griante in the Regal Roller Stakes.
Stratum Star has been a strong and consistent performer for Darren Weir since first arriving in the care of the Wangoom-based trained prior to the 2014 Spring Carnival, and is worth consideration for a 2015 Regal Roller Stakes bet at current odds. Running second in a Sandown minor over 1300m upon resuming this year, the Stratum entire placed third in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) on February 21st before producing arguably a career-best performance for third in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m). Returning to the paddock after finishing second in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) on March 20th, the stallion will be partnered by Mark Zahra this weekend.
