Baster Pleased to Partner No Tricks in PB Lawrence Stakes

Steve Baster won the 2014 edition of the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) aboard notable galloper Star Rolling, and is confident he is a chance of a successful title defence on Saturday despite his mount; four-year-old No Tricks considered a rank outsider.

No Tricks has posted a credible three wins and four minors through only 13 career starts so far and stamped her claims as one to watch through the recent Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival; following up a commendable sixth in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) fourth in the Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m) before taking out the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1800m) last time out on June 20th.

Baster is thrilled to have picked up the ride on the talented kiwi import for her first-up run in the 2015 PB Lawrence Stakes and is confident the Victorian conditions and is excited by the chances of success.

“I rode her first-up in Brisbane after Wayne (Walters, trainer) only got her two weeks beforehand and he didn’t really know what to expect,” Baster told AAP.

“She didn’t really get around that way of going but was only beaten three lengths.

“She ran really well, but then I sacked myself.

“I said to Wayne he’d be better off using a local jockey as she struggled to get around the bends with me that way of going.

“He seems happy with her. He wouldn’t be running her if he wasn’t.”

Beginning her career across the ditch and under the guidance of Jason Bridgeman, No Tricks finished fourth in each of the Group 2 Great Northern Guineas (1600m), Group 3 Mr Tiz Trophy (1200m) and Group 2 Wellington Guineas (1400m) before running second in the Listed Airfreight Stakes (1600m) and winning the Listed Warstep Stakes (2000m).

No Tricks has been confirmed amongst a talented field of nine for the 2015 PB Lawrence Stakes and will jump from the ideal barrier 2 with only 56.5kgs in tow.
