Due to run as Rosehill Race 5 at 3:00pm (AEST), this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Smithfield RSL Club San Domenico Stakes (1100m) field features just eight three-year-olds with valuable stallion prospect Vancouver scaring away the bulk of his rivals.

Waterhouse’s undefeated Medaglia D’Oro colt has won all four of his starts to date in black type company including most famously and recently the $3 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (12000m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 21.

He won his lead-up trial on July 31 at Randwick and despite having to carry the hefty 60kg top weight in the set weights plus penalties clash on Saturday, Vancouver is the short-priced $2.35 favourite in San Domenico Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au with Tommy Berry aboard in barrier seven.

Five of Vancouver’s seven rivals are also under $10 for the win this weekend including the $4.80 second elect Redzel who is drawn one on the favourite’s inside in gate six with Hugh Bowman booked for the ride.

Redzel represents Peter & Paul Snowden, the promising Snitzel colt racing for the first time since running third to Furnaces in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) on a Heavy (9) Randwick track in early April.

Like Vancouver the up-and-comer has won his lead-up trial when putting three and a quarter lengths on Valyrian Steel over 735m late last month.

Occupying the third line of San Domenico Stakes betting at $5.50 is then the Chris Waller-trained Japonisme in gate five shooting for a fourth straight win this time in.

The flying son of Choisir hasn’t been defeated this campaign and was last seen putting an easy four lengths on Tempt Me Not over 1100m at Rosehill a fortnight ago.

Nash Rawiller is replaced by Tye Angland this weekend with Japonisme stepping up to stakes’ company for the first time in the San Domenico.

Rounding out the single figure hopes to score the upset San Domenico Stakes result over Golden Rose – Caulfield Guineas favourite Vancouver are then King’s Troop ($7), Haptic ($8.50) and Headwater ($9).

Gerald Ryan prepares local Redoute’s Choice colt King’s Troop who comes off a win at Warwick Farm by nearly four lengths from August 5 at just his second start, Brenton Avdulla replaced in the saddle by Tim Clark who rides the youngster from barrier four this weekend.

Haptic meanwhile has barrier three, the John O’Shea-trained son of Exceed And Excel racing for the first time since his disappointing 12th to Vancouver in the Golden Slipper.

He has had two subsequent trials however including a win over Raphael’s Cat over 1050m with Clark aboard in late July at Royal Randwick.

Headwater is another Golden Slipper graduate returning to the races on Saturday, the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes winner having run third to Vancouver in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) before his fifth in the Group 1 beaten under two lengths.

Prepared at Rosehill be Team Hawkes, the colt has had two nice Sydney trials and on Saturday jumps from the outside barrier with Blake Shinn booked for the ride.
