The Vain Stakes 2015 kicks off Group racing at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday and the official field and betting markets on the three-year-old feature for colts and geldings are now out.
One of the key support races on the PB Lawrence Stakes Day card in Melbourne this weekend, the $150,000 Group 3 KS Environmental Vain Stakes (1100m) is set to run as Caulfield Race 5 at 2:40pm (AEST).
A final field of 11 three-year-old colts and geldings is set to face off with the Vain Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au firmly led by the Danny O’Brien-trained Ragazzo Del Corsa.
Drawn in gate six with James Winks to ride, the returning son of Stratum currently pays $3.20 to win his second victory at start number four.
His sole win to date was over 1000m at Flemington in early January, the colt racing for the first time since a disappointing seventh to subsequent Group 1 winning filly Pasadena Girl in the Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m) in February.
Following Ragazzo Del Corsa, who comes off an exceptional recent jump-out to prove his race fitness, are three other single figure hopes in Vain Stakes betting including the $4.40 second elect Gold Symphony.
Drawn one inside the favourite in barrier five with ace hoop Glen Boss riding, the lightly-raced Peter Moody-trained Reward For Effort colt won on debut at Mornington at the start of July before a last start second to Jalan Jalan over 1200m at Flemington a fortnight later.
The other two hopes under $10 for the Vain Stakes win this weekend are then Demonstrate ($6.50) and Braccenby ($7.50) drawn in barriers seven and three respectively.
John O’Shea prepares the Godolphin-raced New Approach gelding Demonstrate who has won two of his seven starts to date, most recently over 1000m at Moonee Valley at the start of the month with Saturday his first black type assignment since a disappointing 13th to Of The Brave in the Group 3 Blue Diamond (C&G) Prelude back in mid-February.
Braccenby is the second Moody-trained acceptor, the More Than Ready colt having run fifth in the BD Prelude before a sixth last time out behind Look To The Stars over 1200m at Warwick Farm in early March.
Other notable Vain Stakes hopefuls lining up on Saturday include the early market mover Tony McEvoy’s Written Tycoon gelding Stoker ($10) who ran seventh in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes in February before a first-up sixth at Morphettville late last month, Hawkes Racing’s progressive son of Exceed And Excel Top Me Up ($10) and the John Sadler-trained Lonhro gelding Star Planet ($11).
