Quezette Stakes 2015 Test for Petits Filous

Ciaron Maher’s undefeated filly Petits Filous will step up to black type company for the first time on Saturday looking to keep her unbeaten record in check when she takes on a field of fellow three-year-old fillies in the 2015 Quezette Stakes.

The $150,000 Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100m) takes place as one of four stakes races on PB Lawrence Stakes Day in Melbourne this weekend and gives Maher’s daughter of Street Boss the chance to secure a hat-trick of wins from as many starts.

Both her victories to date have been over the 1000m on rain-affected tracks at Moonee Valley, her successful debut being by six lengths after leading all the way on July 15 before her also impressive two length win to defeat Stream Ahead on August 1.

She now steps up in class looking to keep the winning streak going on Saturday ahead of some possibly even tougher assignments this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival and Maher told AAP he was happy with her condition and her chances.

“She’s in great nick,” he said on Monday.

“She’ll have a little gallop in the morning and she’ll be pretty right to go.

“She has been very impressive in her two starts and a Group 3 is a natural progression, you would think.

“It’s nice timing, in her own backyard at Caulfield at set weights (plus penalties). There’s a lot to like about it.”

The Quezette Stakes is a set weights plus penalties clash that attracted a bumper 18 fillies at nomination stage on Monday, headline entries including the Robert Smerdon-trained Thurlow and Phillip Stokes’ unbeaten filly from Adelaide Miss Gunpowder.

The race serves as an early lead-up for young female gallopers heading towards the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) back at the track over the mile on October 10.

2015 Thousand Guineas nominations closed last week and attracted 276 fillies including Petits Filous.

Early favourite in Thousand Guineas betting at bookies around the country is Peter Moody’s Group 1 Champagne Stakes winner over the Randwick mile from April Pasadena Girl.

Petits Filous is also well liked in the futures markets, her price sure to firm if she steps up and performs well in the Quezette on Saturday where she will carry the 55kg limit with weights topped by Group 3 winner Thurlow (57.5kg)
