Saturday’s San Domenico Stakes 2015 at Rosehill Gardens will serve as a gauge for trainers Peter & Paul Snowden as to what races his progressive youngster Redzel targets this spring in Sydney and Melbourne.
The three-year-old Snitzel colt is one of 10 nominations for the $125,000 Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m), the set weights plus penalties race dominated by the return of Gai Waterhouse’s Golden Slipper winner Vancouver.
Also first-up in the feature will be Redzel for Team Snowden, the galloper last seen running third behind Furnaces in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) on a Heavy (9) Randwick track in early April.
That Group 3 run followed his successful debut when winning by three lengths over the Chris Waller-trained Japonisme, who has won all three of his starts this campaign leading into the San Domenico, over 1100m at Warwick Farm in March.
Nominated for Melbourne’s $1 million Group 1 BECK Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 10, Redzel gets to stake his early spring claims in the San Domenico with connections to be guided by his performance against a crack field including the Golden Rose – Caulfield Guineas favourite Vancouver.
Other notable San Domenico Stakes nominated three-year-olds include Hawkes Racing’s Group 2 winning Exceed And Excel colt Headwater who was last seen running fifth to Vancouver in the Golden Slipper and the Gerald Ryan-trained King’s Troop who comes off an impressive Warwick Farm win by nearly four lengths on August 5.
Originally prepared by King’s Troop’s trainer Ryan, Redzel was transferred to the Snowdens along with a number of Triple Crown Syndications raced gallopers and he has so far impressed his new trainers.
“You couldn’t be more impressed with the way he trialled last week,”co-trianer Paul Snowden told Racing Ahead on RSN.
“He showed a great turn of foot and we weren’t seeing that at home until we put the blinkers on, which he races in.
“He is very much a relaxed type but once you put them on you can see what he can do.”
Redzel won the July 31 trial at Randwick over 735m by over three lengths in the ideal San Domenico lead-up.
All going to plan post-Saturday and the horse will be stepped up in class again, Snowden confident that can happen Redzel suited to the conditions of the race.
“That’s the biggest question and that will be answered on Saturday,” he said of whether the horse will match the class of Vancouver and co.
“I know a lot of them will be first up, and it will get harder throughout the spring, but this race is a very good measuring stick.
“He gets a massive weight drop on the top weight and the distance will suit him more than Vancouver.”
He is bred for success in the race with his dam Millrich running third behind Our Maizcay in the 1995 San Domenico Stakes.
Ten years on his star sire Snitzel also contested the event and was also third behind Media (2005) with Redzel set to continue the tradition another decade on with Hugh Bowman booked for the ride this weekend.
If he handles the assignment well he is set for another run-in with Vancouver in the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) back at Rosehill on September 12.
Vancouver dominates current Golden Rose odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $3.20 while Redzel is a $34 outsider in the futures markets for the race his other co-trainer Peter Snowden has won three times previously with Forensics (2008), Denman (2009) and most recently Epaulette (2012) who were all raced by Darley – now Godolphin.
The Snowdens also have their dual Group 1 winner Pride Of Dubai 2015 Golden Rose bound this spring, the $8 second fancy coming along well.
“He is coming along nicely,” Snowden said.
“There are only two options for him [first-up], he either runs in set-weights-and-penalty races and carries 60kg like Vancouver does on Saturday or we go to Melbourne for those set-weights races.
“We’ve opted to just tread a little bit of water with him and hopefully next Monday we might see him trial.
“He has been in work for a hell of a long time and has a good grounding behind him; he is jumping out of his skin.”
