Red Eclipse Scores Upset 2015 Spring Stakes Result

Grant Young’s seven-year-old sprinter Red Eclipse enjoyed back-to-back wins on successive Saturdays over the weekend with a nice effort in good company to take out the Spring Stakes 2015 at Morphettville Racecourse.

The Red Dazzler gelding jumped a $26 roughie in betting for this year’s $120,000 Group 3 David Coles AM Spring Stakes (1200m), apprentice Sigrid Carr replacing Jason Holder in the saddle.

Drawn a treat with the inside running from barrier one, Red Eclipse had things all his way in the weight-for-age feature and on the line had one and a half lengths to spare over the Danielle Wilson-trained Whitlam ($9).

In third finishing off the Spring Stakes trifecta only a nose further back was the Paul Beshara-trained Richie’s Vibe ($4.60) who held off the $2.80 favourite Riziz by a quarter-length.

Red Eclipse has now won nine of his 38 career starts including his last two on the trot with the Spring Stakes success coming on the back of a victory at Morphettville Parks the previous Saturday over 1250m on a Heavy track.

It was the perfect Spring Stakes result for the Murray Bridge-based Young, a former jumps jockey who now has about 15 horses in work out of his stables, who was thrilled with the black-type victory despite keeping the emotion out of his face.

“Don’t worry, I’m very happy,” he told the media post-win on Saturday.

“This is what it’s all about.”

Carr settled the eventual Spring Stakes winner just off the pace in a race that also featured the return of multiple Group 1 winner Happy Trails (sixth) and the Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained class mare Go Indy Go (eighth).

After getting her mount into the clear, Carr and Red Eclipse took off over the closing stages to hold off the late challenge from Whitlam and score what his hoop described as a “soft win”.

“It was actually a pretty soft win in the end,” she said.

“He felt really good when I asked him to go.”

Young named the $100,000 Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville Parks on August 22 as the likely next-up assignment for Red Eclipse.

“He’s a very fit horse,” Young said.

“I thought he could do that. We’ve been aiming him at this race for a very long time.”

Despite crossing sixth, Happy Trails also caught the eye and Beshara said the Good Journey eight-year-old was spot on for another Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival raid.

His best result in Melbourne last campaign during the autumn was a third to Spillway in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington in mid-March.

Happy Trails enjoyed a stellar spring last year including his win in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) on Victoria Derby Day during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
