Griante Among 2015 Regal Roller Stakes Nominations

David Brideoake’s classy mare Griante is one of the top-rated hopes nominated for Saturday’s Regal Roller Stakes 2015 at Caulfield Racecourse on PB Lawrence Stakes Day in Melbourne.

A handicap clash open to horses aged four and above, this year’s $120,000 Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) has attracted a bumper 23 nominees with the highest-rated being Griante and Fast ‘N’ Rocking on 101 ratings.

Prepared by Brideoake at Mornington, five-year-old Good Journey mare Griante’s last win was in the Group 3 Wenona Girl Handicap (1200m) at Randwick in early March before her Group 1 third behind Lucky Hussler in the William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

Her last start was a close second when beaten a half-length by Avoid Lightning in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) on April 11, Griante boasting an awesome Caulfield record of three wins and a second from her six previous runs at the track.

Fast ‘N’ Rocking is also down to return on the weekend, the Fastnet Rock gelding last seen running fifth to Charlie Boy in Brisbane’s Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) at Doomben on May 9.

If accepted for the Regal Roller he will be having his 13th start at Caulfield, his latest run at the track producing a good third behind Shamal Wind in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) in late February during the autumn.

Hayes & Dabernig have also nominated for veteran eight-year-old Pago Rock, the gelding having only raced last weekend at Flemington when fourth to Shiraz in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) beaten just a length.

Aurie’s Star runner-up Play Master is also nominated for the Regal Roller on the short back-up, Peter Smith’s seven-year-old having gone into last Saturday’s race on the back of a Listed All Victorian Sprint Series Final win over the same track (Flemington) and distance (1200m) from July 11.

Also high up the ratings are the likes of War Pass four-year-old Bondeiger who hasn’t raced since finishing second in the Group 1 Victorian Derby (2500m) last November, Wendy Kelly’s Group 1 performing stallion Late Charge, Platinum Rocker who ran second to Smokin’ Joey in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) on July 25, the Darren Weir-trained Stratum Star and the John O’Shea-trained Barbed.

Stratum stallion Stratum Star enjoyed a stellar autumn campaign in Melbourne as a three-year-old at the start of the year running third in both the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington behind Wandjina before his last start second to Chill Party in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley on March 20.

He is yet to win first-up from three previous resuming runs however and so will take improvement off whatever he does this weekend if accepted.

Barbed meanwhile will be third-up next time out, his latest run being a second to Rock Royalty in the Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) at Grafton on July 8.

Other notable hopes among the Regal Roller Stakes entries include Bletchingly Stakes fourth placed Inspector, the lightly-raced Parwan Prince who has had just the three starts (3-2-1-0) to date and the in-form Stingray for local trainer John Moloney who comes off back-to-back wins on the Geelong synthetic track in July.
