A bumper 19 three-year-olds are nominated for the Vain Stakes 2015 at Caulfield Racecourse on P.B. Lawrence Stakes Day in Melbourne this weekend.
While the major race for the youngsters in Sydney on Saturday is the Group 3 San Domencio Stakes (1100m) where Golden Slipper winner Vancouver has scared away much of the competition, in Victoria the $150,000 Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) is set to steal the show.
A number of progressive gallopers heading towards races like the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1200m) on September 12 and the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 10 – the Gai Waterhouse-trained Vancouver early favourite for both features at Ladbrokes.com.au – are dually nominated for both races this weekend.
In the mix for both the San Domenico in Sydney and Melbourne’s Vain Stakes are the likes of the John O’Shea-trained Haptic, Hawkes Racing’s Headwater and King’s Troop for Gerald Ryan.
The Godolphin-raced Haptic won his opening two races at Randwick in the autumn including the Listed Lonhro Stakes (1100m) before a 12th to Vancouver in the Golden Slipper on March 21.
A son of Exceed And Excel he has had two trials since the Slipper including a win over 1050m at Randwick on July 31 over Raphael’s Cat (2nd) and Furnaces (3rd) who was also runner-up to him in the Lonhro Stakes in mid-February.
Headwater is most likely to take on the undefeated Vancouver in Sydney, but co-trainer Michael Hawkes wasn’t ruling out a Vain Stakes return completely for the Exceed And Excel colt.
Winner of the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) first-up at Rosehill in February, Headwater was third to Vancouver in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Randwick before his Golden Slipper fifth last time out when beaten under two lengths in the world’s richest race for two-year-olds.
King’s Troop comes into Saturday on the back of a different lead-up and will be making his black-type debut in whichever race he starts in.
The Redoute’s Choice colt has had two starts so far for a first-up second behind Chris Waller’s flyer Japonisme in the mud at Rosehill on July 18 before a win at Warwick Farm by nearly four lengths on August 5.
Other Vain Stakes nominees coming off a win include O’Shea’s other entry Demonstrate who has won two of his seven starts to date including over 1000m at Moonee Valley on August 1 and the returning More Than Most for Lindsay Park’s David Hayes & Tom Dabernig who was last seen saluting over 1400m at Cranbourne in mid-May.
Also in the mix are the likes of the Peter Moody-trained Reward For Effort colt Gold Symphony, Mark Riley’s Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude winner Of The Brave and the John Sadler-trained Star Planet who is still a maiden after six career runs.
