Last start Bletchingly Stakes winner Smokin’ Joey is one of the headline nominees for the feature race at Caulfield this weekend, the PB Lawrence Stakes 2015.
A key lead-up to some of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival majors, this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Back to Caulfield P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) attracted 10 early entries on Monday.
Nominations for the weight-for-age feature, which attracts gallopers heading towards races including the $3 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 17, have been extended until 10am (AEST) on Tuesday.
Wez Hunter’s Group 1 winning veteran Smokin’ Joey is one of the original nominees and will shoot for his third straight win if accepted.
Two back the eight-year-old son of Encosta De Lago won the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) at Ipswich in Queensland before his smart two length effort to take out the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.
The other last start winners nominated for the PB Lawrence this spring are the Wayne Walters-trained Savabeel mare No Tricks who won the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1800m) on the Gold Coast in June and the returning Gai Waterhouse-trained import Excess Knowledge.
A six-year-old Monsun stallion, Excess Knowledge won his last two starts in the autumn including the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) in late March and has had two nice Randwick trials since including a close second behind fellow import Greatwood over 1200m on July 31.
The two equal highest-rated entries meanwhile are eight-year-old Moe-trained Mourinho who hasn’t raced since a 13th to Spillway in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) and Mick Burles’s cult Tassie galloper The Cleaner with handicap ratings of 109.
Before the Australian Cup flop Mourinho was in fine autumn form, the Group 2 Australia Stakes winner from January finishing third behind the now-retired Dissident in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) before a win in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield a fortnight later.
The Cleaner also resumes on Saturday, the 49-start veteran’s latest run being a fifth to Sertorius in the Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) at Caulfield in April on the back of a good Australian Cup fourth when beaten just over two lengths.
Other gallopers that ran well last time out include the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Petrology and Darren Weir’s Taiyoo.
One of two Lindsay Park nominees along with the imported Dibayani from Hong Kong who is yet to race down under, four-year-old Fastnet Rock stallion Petrology comes off a third to Smokin’ Joey in the Bletchingly Stakes.
He was beaten three and a quarter lengths first-up and shoots for his maiden win two runs in this weekend in a rematch with the Bletchingly champ.
Taiyoo meanwhile is an ultra-consistent Haradasun six-year-old who won five on the trot before a last start second to Tanby in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) over the two miles at Morphettville in March.
His victories included a Moonee Valley black-type in the Listed Torney Cup (2500m) on February 20 and the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) at Morphettville just eight days later.
