Sebring Sun is on track for a Golden Rose 2015 campaign this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival after impressing with a win in Saturday’s The Rosebud at Royal Randwick.
The Gary Portelli-trained son of Sebring scored his second career win at start number six, backing up from a first-up effort over 1200m at Canterbury on July 29 to beat home Voilier by a length in the $100,000 Listed The Rosebud (1200m) over the weekend.
Ridding by Brenton Avdulla, Sebring Sun jumped the $3.10 favourite in betting and had a length to spare on the line from Gary Nickson’s runner-up after finding the front in the straight to race clear of his rivals.
“He is a lovely horse,” winning hoop Avdulla said of Sebring Sun.
“I had to get a bit further back than I wanted and had to time my run.
“But I was confident and he did what I expected.”
In third was then the Ron Quinton-trained Not A Single Doubt colt Let’s Make It Rain ($3.70) who was just a nose further back to finish off the trifecta.
Portelli has always had a high opinion of Sebring Sun, and the progression from a midweek win to the black-type success on Missile Stakes Day has further convinced the Sydney horseman in his colt’s class.
“I’ve always thought he could step up but you worry when they come up against the better horses,” Portelli told AAP.
“I think he has shown he can and he will have to if he’s going to meet horse like Vancouver in the Golden Rose.”
The Rosebud is an official lead-up to the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) run at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday September 12.
Futures Golden Rose odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are firmly led by Gai Waterhouse’s Golden Slipper winner Vancouver ($3.20) who kicks off his spring this weekend in the $125,000 Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill.
Sebring Sun meanwhile has firmed in Golden Rose betting but is still at a juicy price of $17 to take out the three-year-old spring classic.
Portelli confirmed plans to run The Rosebud winner next-up in the $125,000 Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) back at Randwick on Warwick Stakes Day, August 22, before the Group 1 assignment at Rosehill.
“He will go to the Up And Coming Stakes in three weeks and then to the big race,” he said.
The Up And Coming Stakes will be a rematch between Sebring Sun and Voilier, but the latter is not heading into the Golden Rose.
“He won’t go to the Golden Rose. I’m trying to avoid those horses,” Nickson said, naming the $125,000 Group 3 Ming Dynasty Handicap (1400m) on September 5 as the post Up And Coming Stakes run for Voilier.
While Vancouver and the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Blue Diamond – ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes double winner Pride Of Dubai are set to race in the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) over the mile on October 10 post-Golden Rose, Portelli plans to keep Sebring Sun down in distance.
Instead he will target the $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day, October 31.
