The Rosebud 2015 Tips

The first official race leading up to the Golden Rose Stakes next month takes place at Royal Randwick on Saturday with a top field of three-year-olds facing off in the 2015 The Rosebud, betting tips for which can be found right here.

There are eight in the mix for this year’s $100,000 Listed The Rosebud (1200m) including the red hot $2.70 favourite through, Rageese.

Tommy Berry’s mount is drawn in barrier five and Saturday will be the first-up run of the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained son of Street Cry since the colt’s brave second behind Blue Diamond winner Pride Of Dubai in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) also run at Randwick on April 6.

Rageese showed he was ready to return with a trial win in the wet at Rosehill last month, Berry aboard for that as well as the youngster’s second in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) in March leading into the Sires.

Five of his seven rivals join Rageese at single figures in The Rosebud betting including the market mover Sebring Sun ($4.40 into $3.80) who comes off a smart first-up win at Canterbury and Vanbrugh ($6.50) from the star Sydney stables of Chris Waller.

So will the first three in the markets run the trifecta or is there an upset The Rosebud result on the cards from a longer priced hope such as the rails drawn Tatoosh ($9) who ran second to fellow Rosebud hope Let’s Make It Rain ($7.50) last time out?

#4 Sebring Sun ($3.80)

There’s plenty to like about the resuming run of Gary Portelli’s galloper who did a great job from an awkward gate (13 of 13) when carrying 59.5kg to victory first-up at Canterbury on June 29. That was his first run since a fifth in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm in late February and if he can produce a similar run in black-type company as he did when resuming he’ll be hard to hold off again. Will relish a far better barrier (4) in a smaller field and also the drop right back 5.5kg in weights to the 54kg minimum this weekend.

#1 Rageese ($2.70)

Race favourite and deservingly so based on what the Team Hawkes-trained colt did in his opening campaign. The ATC Sires’ Produce second was a ripper when beaten under a length last time out. Is still a maiden from three runs and think he’ll improve over a little more distance. Can still run a good race and make it a real thriller based on his 1.5 length trial win with Berry, who retains the ride for the weekend, over 900m at Rosehill last month.

#3 Let’s Make It Rain ($7.50)

Plenty of livewire chances to finish the trifecta off but going for another last start winner with the Ron Quinton-trained Not A Single Doubt colt having done a nice job on a Heavy (9) at Canterbury on July 25 to win by a length. Is improving each run, has seen the track for an Inglis Nursery third last December and carries 54kg with Sam Clipperton in the saddle.
