Racing in Adelaide is headlined on Saturday by the 2015 Spring Stakes at Morphettville Racecourse, betting tips for the weight-for-age sprint found below.
Due to run as Morphettville Race 7 at 4:08pm (AEST), this year’s $12,000 Group 3 David Coles AM Spring Stakes (1200m) originally drew a final field of 12.
The early scratching of the Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained Daytona Grey though has left 11 in the mix with the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au led by Riziz at $4.20.
Drawn the extreme outside barrier, Ken Sweeney’s local seven-year-old is looking to improve on a last start ninth in Melbourne’s Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield from early July.
He has a top record over the 1200m at Morphettville though with five wins, a second and a third from 12 previous starts over the track and distance so the bookies are taking no chances on the veteran gelding.
Also at single figures are five other runners including the market mover Richie’s Vibe ($6 into $5) who is drawn nicely in barrier three with Dom Tourneur in the saddle and the Paul Beshara-trained Australian Cup third placegetter from the autumn Happy Trails ($7 into $6).
So do the bookmakers have it right or is there more value to be found further down the Spring Stakes odds from the likes of Danielle Wilson’s last start winner Whitlam ($10) or the Peter Moody-trained Justify That ($14) who comes off back-to-back seconds in Adelaide?
#4 Whitlam ($10)
There’s a host of livewire hopes with genuine claims but double figures is a nice offering for this local Elusive Quality seven-year-old who comes off a win at the track over 1100m from July 25 over class galloper Nearest To Pin. Carried the same weight from the same gate with the same hoop as this weekend, Shayne Cahill riding from nine on 58.5kg. Is a stakes winner at the course from the summer and in an even race can score the upset.
#3 Richie’s Vibe ($5)
Money is coming for this nicely-drawn Danerich six-year-old who is first-up and has a good 50% strike rate when resuming (4-2-0-0). Same record at Morphettville where he ran his last race to finish fifth behind Runway Star in the Listed Matrice Stakes (1200m) back in March. Also ran fifth in mid-February the run before in Group 2 company behind champion galloper Chautauqua at Caulfield so has form around some very nice types and is also Group 1 performed.
#10 Red Eclipse ($41)
The wet track could throw up some genuine value this weekend and at over $40 in betting the Grant Young-trained Red Dazzler seven-year-old is a definite hope at crazy odds. He has a solid record on rain-affected tracks including a last start victory over 1250m on a Heavy (8) at Morphettville Parks from last weekend. Is on the short turnaround, but the form is there and if he handles the rise from 54kg to 58.5kg can be right in the finish.
