Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This weekend in Sydney the spring Group racing action kicks off a Randwick Racecourse with the Missile Stakes 2015, tips for the weight-for-age feature found below.
There are nine sprinters in the mix for this season’s $175,000 Group 2 McGrath Estate Agents Missile Stakes (1200m), which is set to run as Randwick Race 6 at 3:30pm (AEST).
Leading Missile Stakes betting at $3.40 through Ladbrokes.com.au is the Team Hawkes-trained Messene, a Tommy Berry mount drawn a treat in barrier three and coming off a solid third in a Rosehill trial over 900m from Tuesday morning.
It is a wide open affair according to the bookies with all but three in the line-up under $10 for the win including the other best fancied runners in Tony Gollan’s veteran Group 1 winner Temple Of Boom ($4.60) and the returning Chris Waller-trained Weary ($5.50) who won the Group 2 Expressway Stakes over the same distant first-up last campaign.
So are the order of the Missile Stakes odds right or is there an upset on the cards from the likes of the in-form Lord Leofric ($7) after his fourth straight win or even Liberty’s Choice ($9) out to give trainer Gai Waterhouse back-to-back wins in the race after the success of subsequent Memsie Stakes runner-up Sweet Idea 12 months ago?
#3 Temple Of Boom ($4.60)
The money is coming for this Brisbane-based nine-year-old who continues to show plenty of zest for a life on the racetrack. Winner of the 2013 The Galaxy, this evergreen warhorse is the market mover ($4.80 into $4.60) and is drawn a treat in barrier two with Gollan more than happy to have young Winona Costin in the saddle. The Piccolo gelding has his 60th career start but this is just his third look at Randwick. He won his Group 1 here three years ago and comes off a blistering four length trial win at the course on July 31 so has the form to suggest he can win first-up here and add to a solid record when resuming (13-4-3-0) and crack the $2 million in prize money.
#1 Weary ($5.50)
Still a good price offered for Waller’s French import who has the wide barrier (nine) but ticks plenty of boxes including a good first-up record (6-2-1-1) and the Group 2 Expressway win over this distance when resuming last time. His most recent run was a good second in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) and he has won two from three over the 1200m, although from seven runs at Randwick he has just the one second and two thirds so definitely take for the place over the win.
#8 Lord Leofric ($7)
Probably hasn’t got the class of some of his better performing rivals here but the form of this David Pfieffer-trained War Pass stallion is too good to ignore completely. The five-year-old has had six starts for four wins and a third, including victories in his three most recent runs and a last start win over 1100m at Warwick Farm in the wet. Handles all track conditions but Soft (4-3-0-0) looks his preferred and did it with 58kg last time out so can handle kilos as well.
