A host of possible Golden Rose contenders are nominated to face off this weekend in Sydney’s The Rosebud 2015 at Randwick Racecourse on Missile Stakes Day.
The key support act on the card this weekend and a key lead-up to the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) on September 12 at Rosehill, this Saturday’s $100,000 Listed The Rosebud (1200m) has attracted nine three-year-olds at nomination stage.
Four of the early entries come off a win including the flying Gai Waterhouse-trained filly Kimberley Star who shoots for her fourth straight turf triumph.
The winning streak started at the start of July at Warwick Farm where she broke her maiden status on a Heavy (9) track over 1300m before another win in the mud on July 11 at Randwick and then her victory over 1400m at Rosehill last Saturday.
Top hoop Blake Shinn has been aboard Kimberley Star for all three wins including the impressive three length effort over the David Payne-trained More Than Fabulous in the $85,000 Structaflor Yellowtongue Plate (1400m) last weekend.
The other last start winners are the Mark Macdonald-trained Can Be Bossy who won at home at Moruya, Ron Quinton’s Not A Single Doubt colt Let’s Make It Rain who saluted at Canterbury on July 25 over 1250m and the Gary Portelli-trained Sebring Sun.
Sebring Sun also saluted at Canterbury last time out over 1200m on July 29, the chestnut colt enjoying his maiden win at start number five with Hugh Bowman in the saddle.
Another headline The Rosebud entry is the Godolphin-raced Inner Circle prepared by John O’Shea.
The nicely-bred Street Cry colt won on debut back in late February at the track and then finished a brave fourth when beaten under a length and a half off the winner Tarquin in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) in mid-March.
His latest start was a third in the same Canterbury race that fellow The Rosebud hopeful Let’s Make It Rain comes via, as does the Paul Perry-trained runner-up Tatoosh.
Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller also has a single The Rosebud entry this spring with his Northern Meteor colt Metallic Crown looking to improve on a third behind Sebring Sun at Canterbury on debut last time out.
Rounding out the hopefuls are Gary Nickson’s Beneteau gelding Voilier and the Team Hawkes-trained Street Cry colt Rageese who shape up as two of the major players.
Voilier was runner-up to Headwater in February’s Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) before a Group 2 Todman Stakes fifth behind Waterhouse’s star colt Vancouver and a resuming fourth over 1100m at Rosehill in the mud on July 18.
Rageese meanwhile is a Group 1 placegetter having finished second to Pride Of Dubai in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick in early April before a winning barrier trial over 900m at Rosehill on July 21.
