Waterhouse Confident Vancouver Won’t Be Beaten

The exact path that Vancouver will follow during the 2015 Spring Racing Carnival is yet to be determined, but trainer Gai Waterhouse is confident that the talented colt will not be beaten in whatever races he contests.

Vancouver was sent to the spelling paddock following his memorable victory in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 21, but has now been back in work for a couple of months and he made his first public appearance with a barrier trial victory at Royal Randwick this morning.

The Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) is set to be the first 2015 Spring Racing Carnival target for Vancouver and Waterhouse told Racing Ahead that a decision will then be made about whether the three-year-old presses on to races like the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October and Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 24 or is dropped back in trip for the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day, but Waterhouse made it very clear that she expects the Medaglia D’Oro colt to win every race that he contests.

“After the Golden Rose a decision will be made by Coolmore and the Group on will he go on to the Cox Plate or will be freshened up for the Coolmore,” Waterhouse said.

“Whatever he runs in I don’t think they will beat him – that is how good he is.”

Vancouver recorded four impressive wins from as many starts as a two-year-old, but Waterhouse believes that we haven’t seen anywhere near the best of the horse and she is confident he will go to another level in the spring.

Waterhouse revealed that Vancouver now worked alongside the older horses in her stable and she said that he had no trouble mixing it with the likes of Cosmic Endeavour.

“He is the most exciting colt that I have come across for a long time,” Waterhouse said.

“Nothing is a problem and he takes everything in his stride.

“He never goes out of second gear and the Slipper was probably the first time that you saw him get out of first gear.

“He toys with the Group 1 horses, he is too good for the two-year-olds that I have there and I work him with a horse like Cosmic Endeavour and she is an older mare and a Group 1 mare.

“He is certainly right up with the very best as a two-year-old, he is a supreme athlete and he is incredible handsome.

“He is a beautifully natured horse.”
