Trust In A Gust Set for Memsie Stakes

Darren Weir wrapped up another Victorian Trainer’s Premiership with a double at Geelong on Saturday and the leading trainer is already plotting his first major win of the new season in confirming two-time Group 1 winner Trust In A Gust will be set for the 2015 Memsie Stakes (1400m).

Trust In A Gust returned to competition for a close second behind Red Bomber in the Vobis Gold Sprint (1200m) at Caulfield on April 18th, but was unlucky to be ruled out of all major targets through the recent Brisbane Winter Carnival as a result of a niggling injury.

Weir was disappointed the Keep The Faith entire was unable to take to the blocks for Brisbane’s major Group 1 sprints but is confident the rising five-year-old is ready for a racing return and capable of success in the 2015 Memsie Stakes.

“He’ll resume in two weeks,” Weir told AAP.

“He’ll run in the 1200 at Flemington (Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap) and then he’ll run in the first Group One, the Memsie.

Brad (Rawiller) galloped him on Saturday and said he’s in good order.”

Trust In A Gust has been a strong and consistent performer for Weir since first debuting to racing partway through 2013; posting an impressive ten wins and six minors from only eighteen competitive starts.

Winning each of his first two starts during the 2013 Spring Carnival, Trust In A Gust made a competitive debut to black type racing when fourth behind the likes of Hucklebuck in the Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) in October; progressing to sixth in the Listed Bendigo Guineas (1400m) during the same preparation but ending his campaign second to Worth A Ransom in the Vobis Gold Reef (1600m) on April 5th.

Undoubtedly finding career-best form to date through the 2014 Spring Carnival, the stallion out of Subtle Breeze won a Moonee Valley minor over 1200m first-up; progressing to second in Listed Drummond Golf Stakes (1400m) before taking out each of the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m).
