Stokes Pleased with Caro Kann Ahead of Lightning Stakes

Leading South Australian trainer Phillip Stokes has been thrilled with the short but impressive career start posted by rising three-year-old Caro Kann, and is confident the horse is forward enough for success in Saturday’s Listed Lightning Stakes (1050m) at Morphettville.

Caro Kann was unable to make much of a competitive impact when eighth behind champion colt Vancouver in the Listed NSW Thoroughbred Breeders Plate (1000m) on debut for Peter and Paul Snowden in October, but immediately impressed upon arriving in the care of Stokes; running second in the Darley Plate (1000m) three weeks later.

Pleased with the condition of the talented son on Denman leading into the 2015 Lightning Stakes, Stokes told Racing Ahead he will instruct jockey Paul Gatt to take a forward position from jump.

“He’s a pre-running sort of horse,” Stokes said.

“I think keeping him back to the 1000m or 1200m is about his go.

“He’s had a couple of jump-outs going into this, is quite forward and he’ll run well.

“We won’t be changing anything and it’s what he likes to do, so he’ll be up there at the lead somewhere.”

Caro Kann has finished outside the first three only two times in his six career starts and broke through for a maiden race win upon returning to competition this year; hitting the line a comfortable half-length in the clear of closest rival Coerced Witness in the Wolf Blass Handicap (1100m) at Gawler on February 21st.

Progressing to a credible fourth in the Magic Millions Adelaide 2.y.o Classic (1200m) on March 9th, the gelding out of Late Watch jumped from the gates well in the Group 3 SA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) most recently on April 11th; receiving an ideal run in transit but unable to match the late pace of The Grey Flash before finishing third.

Leading online bookie is currently offering the best 2015 Lightning Stakes odds, for which Caro Kann can be taken at a particularly generous quote of $11 for success.
