Hazard to Return in Cockram Stakes

Trainer Lee Freedman is thrilled Godolphin have elected to keep Hazard in work for a 2015 Spring Carnival campaign, and has revealed the talented mare is on track for a racing return in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) on August 29th.

Hazard was due to retire into a career as a broodmare following he impressive win in the Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) on May 16th, but Freedman’s desire to press on with the classy daughter of Flying Spur was rewarded when she posted a career-best win in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) on June 6th.

Having since placed a credible seventh in less-than desirable conditions in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) on June 20th, Freedman is pleased with Hazard’s condition since her return from a brief spell and told Racing Ahead he is confident of another successful campaign this time.

“She swam every day and had a bit of paddock and we just kept her interested, just kept her from getting fat,” Freedman said.

“I am really delighted with her condition and she’ll probably run in that mares’ stakes race at the end of August (Cockram Stakes) as a lead-in run to the Let’s Elope and then beyond that we’ll see what her form is like.

“If she doesn’t attain the same form by early to mid-September then there’s always the option of her going onto the breeding barn.

“Everything that I’ve seen of her since she’s been back from Brisbane is she’s retained her zest for racing.

“I think a mare like her that’s made about an 18 point improvement in her form and is now considered to be one of the better top 10-12-1400m mares in Australia there’s certainly some good options for her in the spring.”

Posting an impressive ten wins and five minors through 26 career starts so far, Hazard has been a strong and consistent performer for Anthony Freedman in each of her racing preparations since first debuting in mid-2012, and returned this year for immediate success in the Grand Hotel Frankston BM90 (1000m) on April 1st.
