2015 Lightning Stakes Field Features Wild Rain

Mark Kavanagh’s in-form Group 3 performed filly Wild Rain is the top-rated final acceptor for the feature black-type in Adelaide this weekend, Morphettville’s Lightning Stakes 2015.

Due to run as Race 7 at 3:58pm (local time), this year’s $100,000 Listed Lighting Stakes (1050m) features a final field of 14 sprinters including Kavanagh’s three-year-old daughter of Manhattan Rain.

Wild Rain won over 1000m at Moonee Valley two back by a tidy two and a half lengths before her last start second behind Lindsay Park’s Miss Promiscuity in the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield at the start of the month.

She drops in class for Saturday’s South Australian black-type then but goes up half a kilo to 56.5kg with Matthew Neilson booked for the ride.

Wild Rain is drawn a treat in the short distance clash for two and three-year-old gallopers with barrier two and is sure to start near the top of the Lightning Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au as she’s won her only other start at the track and boasts a good record over the distance (9-4-1-1).

Also drawn well in barrier three with apprentice Jake Toeroek retaining the ride in the non-claiming race is the Richard Jolly-trained Bay Road.

The local Court Command gelding won at the track over 1100m two back with 54kg, but handled more weight with 58kg on his back last time out for a third behind I’m A Flying Star in a three-year-old’s handicap at Morphettville Parks on July 4.

First and second past the post in that 1000m lead-up from earlier in the month, I’m A Flying Star (1st) and Cashed (2nd) are both also accepted for a rematch in the Lighting Stakes this weekend.

Travelling to Adelaide from trainer Mark Riley’s Mornington base, nicely-bred Starcraft filly I’m A Flying Star had only a nose to spare on the line for her second career win at start number 15 last time out in the Darley Handicap with Clare Lindop in the saddle on 54.5kg.

This weekend apprentice Harry Coffey takes over in the saddle with Lindop engaged to ride one of the top fancies Counter Pulse.

I’m A Flying Star also has a wide barrier 10 draw and 56.5kg weight to handle if she is to go back-to-back.

Cashed is drawn better in barrier six, the Ryan Balfour-trained Krupt gelding one closer to the rails than the gate he jumped from in the Darley Handicap.

Lindop’s ride on Saturday, Counter Pulse, meanwhile is in barrier five and carrying 54.5kg as the Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained son of Hard Spun shoots for his third win on the trot.

The flying two-year-old gelding won over 1200m defeating Éclair Attack on May 30 at Morphettville before heading Morphettville Parks at the start of this month to win again, this time carrying four kilos more than his weight on the weekend to score over 1000m and take his record to four victories from seven starts.

Other notable Lighting Stakes hopes in the Adelaide black-type on Saturday include Balfour’s local filly Trupt coming off a win at the track and distance from June 27, the returning David Jolly-trained Niccorossa and Group 1 performed Stoker.

Tony McEvoy’s Written Tycoon gelding Stoker won the Inglis 2YO Premier at Sandown-Hillside in early February before stepping up to elite level company in the Blue Diamond Stakes when seventh behind Pride Of Dubai in his latest run.
