Jetset Lad Secures 2015 Tattersall’s Mile – Results

Brian Smith’s veteran galloper Jetset Lad enjoyed another Brisbane feature race win this Queensland Winter Racing Carnival over the weekend when beating home a decent field in the Tattersall’s Mile 2015 at Doomben Racecourse.

The Elusive City seven-year-old won the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2200m) at the track on June 6 as a $41 outside before a fifth in Listed company at the Gold Coast a fortnight later over 1800m.

On Saturday he lined-up for his 60th career start and was down in distance again for the $100,000 Listed Tattersall’s Mile Handicap (1640m), a concern for many punters but not his trainer who always had faith.

“Once a good horse, always a good horse,” Smith said according to The Sunday Mail.

“I’ve got a hell of a lot of faith in him. This horse is thriving, imagine coming back from the Brisbane Cup to win over this distance?

“I have got a bit of age on me and this horse has got a bit of age on him, but together we are a good team.

“It’s just lovely for a bloke like me to be able to keep winning races.”

Allocated the 58.5kg top weight, two kilos more than his weight from the Southbank Handicap last time out when Chris Whiteley had the ride, Gold Coast-based hoop Paul Hammersley was back on the old warhorse after winning the Brisbane Cup with him.

While he had the hefty kilos, Jetset Lad ($11) proved his class with a determined effort and held off the Kelly Doughty-trained mare Little Brown Horse ($11) by a long neck to win.

In third a further one and a quarter lengths off to finish off the Tattersall’s Mile trifecta was then another nicely-drawn local veteran, Kelly Schweida’s Stratum seven-year-old Epic ($6) relishing the inside alley with Tegan Harrison aboard.

Race favourite meanwhile was the Steven O’dea-trained Dubawi Dream ($4.60) who failed to fire and could only manage to run four and a quarter lengths away 10th in the 12-starter field.

Hammersley confirmed Jetset Lad was one of his favourite horses and described the horse’s efforts in the Tattersall’s Mile on Saturday as “magic”.

“He is definitely up there that is for sure,” he said.

“He jumped 5.5kg from his Brisbane Cup win and has done a really magic job.

“He’s not a young horse anymore but he is racing better than ever.

“When it came down to an arm wrestle, I was very confident he was going to hold off all his rivals.”

Smith could now head towards the $175,000 Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) on September 18 with Jetset Lad before targeting next year’s Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
