Winter Stakes 2015 Betting Tips

Sydney hosts this weekend’s feature race at Rosehill Gardens with a quality line-up of off-season sprinters facing off in the 2015 Winter Stakes, betting tips for the handicap clash detailed below.

Rugged Cross

Running as Race 7 at 3:550m (AEST) on Saturday afternoon, this year’s $100,000 Listed Sydney Markets Limited Winter Stakes (1400m) originally drew a final field of 13.

Two early scratchings leave 11 in the mix however with the latest withdrawal being the Chris Waller-trained Instrumentalist who runs at Flemington instead.

Of those left in the mix the Winter Stakes betting markets are led by the Kristen Buchanan-trained mare Two Blue ($4.20) who boasts two seconds from four previous runs over the track and distance.

Drawn in barrier seven with Paul King aboard on 55kg, the six-year-old comes off a second in the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) from a fortnight ago behind fellow Winter Stakes hope Haussmann when beaten only a neck.

The other best fancied in the Winter Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are Waller’s in-form market mover You’ll Never ($5) in barrier two and the John O’Shea-trained Civic Stakes winner Haussmann ($6).

So will the first three in betting be first three over the line on Saturday or is there an upset Winter Stakes result on the cards from a longer priced hope such as Peter Moody’s last start winning mare Noela’s Choice ($7.50) in the outside alley or the Joe Pride-trained Civic Stakes third placed See The World ($9)?

1st

#7 Rugged Cross ($12)

Going for an upset with an honest import from Sydney’s best stable and rate Waller’s Cape Cross six-year-old who has been racing consistently without getting the bikkies. Third in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup three back, his latest run was a fourth in the Civic Stakes on a Heavy track, which he handles well (5-2-1-0). Has a good record over this distance (8-3-1-1) and did a good job last time from barrier 12 (of 12) with 55kg, making the inside alley with only a kilo more on Saturday big ticks.

2nd

#3 You’ll Never ($5)

Lock in an all-Waller quinella with the better fancied of the stablemates a big danger. Drawn just one wider in gate two, Blake Shinn fresh off a winning Singapore double is back aboard this five-year-old son of Commands who has a great Rosehill record (16-4-2-3), nice form over 1400m (16-4-3-4) and good experience over the Track & Distance (8-2-1-2). Last four runs this time in have all been at Rosehill for two wins over 1350m and 1400m and then two thirds, the latest on a Heavy (8) over 1500m with Shinn aboard from gate one on 59kg. Little bit of weight relief and is right in the mix.

3rd

#8 Two Blue ($4.20)

Deserving favourite based on her nice lead-up and don’t think she’ll be finishing far away again here. Good mid-field draw, 55kg is a nice weight and only a neck in the Civic Stakes finish last time out. If she improves she can win, just depends how that form stacks up and how muddy this track gets.
