Kristen Buchanan’s in-form mare Two Blue is the early favourite in the latest Winter Stakes 2015 odds for this weekend in Sydney to beat the field of fellow off-season sprinters at Rosehill Gardens.
Set to run as Rosehill Race 7 at 3:55pm (AEST), this year’s $100,000 Listed Sydney Markets Limited Winter Stakes (1400m) originally drew a final field of 13 hopefuls.
That is down to a dozen starters now with the early scratching of the John Salanitri-trained Royal Island who was drawn in gate three.
Winter Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au is currently led by Dubleo six-year-old Two Blue at $4.20 (in from $4.60), jockey Paul King to ride the flying mare from gate six on 55kg.
She has run top two in her three most recent runs, backing up from a win over 1200m at Rosehill on a Heavy (8) before crossing a neck away second to the John O’Shea-trained Haussmann in the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) at the same track on July 4.
The Civic Stakes from a fortnight ago is shaping up as the form line to follow into the Winter Stakes on the weekend with the bookies taking no chances on the winner Haussmann who occupies the third line of betting at $5.50.
Firming in from $6.50, the Godolphin-raced Commands five-year-old has James McDonald back aboard but attempts back-to-back Black-Type wins from a wide gate (10) with a big weight (57kg), which is three kilos more than what he carried in the Civic Stakes from the inside alley.
In between the Civic Stakes quinella in Winter Stakes betting this weekend is then the big market mover You’ll Never who Blake Shinn continues an association with.
After opening at $6 the Chris Waller-trained gelding has firmed right into $4.60.
Drawn nicely in gate two the son of Commands has a great record at Rosehill (16-4-2-3) and over the distance (16-4-3-4), and has finished in the money in all four of his starts this time in.
The latest was on a Heavy (8) here over 1500m on June 27 when third and beaten only one and a half lengths by Beauty’s Beast.
Shinn rode You’ll Never that day and he’s back aboard after a winning double at Singapore last Sunday, the internationally performed hoop needing the speed on in the race to get his mount to the line first.
There are then three other single figure hopes in the Winter Stakes odds at Ladbrokes with Noela’s Choice ($7), See The World ($9) and the returning Liberty’s Choice ($9).
Peter Moody prepares four-year-old Sebring mare Noela’s Choice who shoots for back-to-back Sydney wins after success over the Randwick mile on a mud track only last Saturday.
She’s on the short back-up and is up in class with the outside alley to overcome but drops two kilos and is showing lots of early class.
See The World is at the opposite end of the weight scale with 58kg and is also drawn wide one inside of Noela’s Choice with Hugh Bowman to ride the Joe Pride-trained veteran who has good lead-up form including a last start third in the Civic Stakes.
One of two returning hopes for Gai Waterhouse along with the 59kg top weight Spurtonic ($13), Liberty’s Choice meanwhile has Tommy Berry riding for the Redoute’s Choice four-year-old’s first run since crossing sixth to Hooked in the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day last October.
