Spurtonic Tops 2015 Winter Stakes Field & Weights

Set to run as Rosehill Race 7 at 3:55pm (AEST), this year’s $100,000 Listed Sydney Markets Limited Winter Stakes (1400m) has attracted a 13 horse final field.

To wear the number one saddlecloth and carry the 59kg top weight with apprentice Travis Wolfgram booked for the ride in the non-claiming handicap is Waterhouse’s Flying Spur gelding Spurtonic.

The five-year-old hasn’t raced since injuring himself when dead last (11th) behind Index Linked in the Listed Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m) at Caulfield in late February during the autumn.

That was the horse’s third failed run on the trot, Spurtonic not having won a race since the Magic Millions Cup (1400m) on the Gold Coast back on January 10.

He is back to the track in the Winter Stakes though having had two trials over 1200m last month, and while he has a good first-up record of three wins from six starts, will need to be at his best with 59kg in a class field.

The next two heaviest weighted Winter Stakes acceptors this season are the Joe Pride-trained See The World and Chris Waller’s in-form You’ll Never both carrying 58kg but drawn at opposite ends of the field in gates 12 and two respectively.

Both Sydney-trained locals have run back-to-back thirds in their two most recent lead-up races and look on track for a big run.

Hugh Bowman is booked to ride Pride’s rising Danzero nine-year-old, the evergreen veteran having crossed two lengths off the winner Timeless Prince when third in the Winter Dash run on a Heavy (10) at Randwick two back before his last start third in the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) here at Rosehill a fortnight ago.

You’ll Never meanwhile has Blake Shinn staying on after the duo finished third on rain-affected Sydney track over 1500m on June 27 from a similar barrier (1) carrying 59kg, making Saturday’s weight a manageable one for the five-year-old Commands gelding.

Waller has also accepted for the returning Irish import Instrumentalist (barrier 10) who hasn’t raced since winning back-to-back races over 2400m in Melbourne at the start of 2014, six-year-old Diametric (barrier four) who Glyn Schofield rides second-up and Rugged Cross.

Consistent British import Rugged Cross gets the inside run from barrier one carrying 56kg with Brenton Avdulla aboard on Saturday, the Cape Cross six-year-old last seen running fourth in the Civic Stakes carrying 55kg from a wide barrier 12 of 12 draw.

The Civic Stakes could prove the form line to follow in the Winter Stakes with the John O’Shea-trained winner Haussmann back after successive wins.

He has an outside gate 11 draw for this Saturday’s test, James McDonald back aboard the Commands gelding for the first time since mid-May.

Haussmann had an easier assignment in the Civic Stakes when drawn gate one and carrying the 54kg minimum, so needs to improve from the wide barrier with three kilos extra in the Winter Stakes.

Civic Stakes runner-up Two Blue is also back looking to turn the tables on her last start conqueror, Kristen Buchanan’s in-form mare drawn in gate seven with Paul King to ride after Winona Costin guided the Dubleo six-year-old to her neck-away-second last start.
