A dozen milers are engaged to face off in the Tattersall’s Mile 2015 field at Brisbane’s Doomben Racecourse on Saturday continuing the Black-Type action of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.
Due to run as Doomben Race 6 at 3:27pm (AEST), this year’s $100,000 Listed Tattersall’s Mile Handicap (1640m) field is led by Jetset Lad carrying the 58.5kg top weight.
Drawn ideally in gate two with Paul Hammersley in the saddle, the Elusive City seven-year-old is prepared locally by Brian Smith and won the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2200m) with 53kg and Hammersley aboard two back on June 6.
His latest run was with 56.5kg and Chris Whiteley riding when fifth to Addictive Habit in the Listed Southbank Handicap (1800m) on June 20, Jetset Lad back down to a mile chasing just his second win from 16 starts over the distance this weekend.
Following in the Tattersall’s Mile field and weights is then the rails-drawn Epic for Kelly Schweida.
Barrier one belongs to the 38-start veteran, Stratum gelding Epic carrying 57kg with Tegan Harrison booked to replace Glen Colless in the saddle.
Colless rode the seven-year-old to a fourth in the Southbank Handicap two back before a disappointing sixth over the same distance at the Sunshine Coast last time out on July 4 when beaten over six lengths.
Winner of that lead-up race, the Troy Trevitt Homes Open Handicap, also backs up in the Tattersall’s Mile this weekend with the Tony Gollan-trained Trakstar shooting for back-to-back wins.
A consistent five-year-old son of Stratum, he did it from gate six with 54kg at the start of the month and on Saturday jumps from a wider barrier 11 of 12 draw with veteran jockey Jim Byrne riding him on just half a kilo more.
Runner-up in the same Sunshine Coast lead-up from July 4, Kelly Doughty’s six-year-old Little Brown Horse is another genuine Tattersall’s Mile contender drawn well in barrier four for apprentice Geoffrey Goold and getting in on the 54kg minimum like the remainder of the contenders.
The Waterford Road mare has her 53rd career run on the weekend and shoots for her first victory since a mid-May success over 1400m at Caloundra.
Also coming off nice lead-up runs are Trevor Bailey’s recent Ipswich winning Street Cry four-year-old Avalanches, the Steven O’dea-trained Dubawi stallion Dubawi Dream who has won two of his past three runs and Blue Lion in the outside alley.
