Golden Rose the Likely Target for Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva stamped her claims as one to watch through a standout Autumn Carnival preparation and will be set for a tilt at the featured Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) upon resuming in spring.

While surprisingly yet to break through for a race win, Lake Geneva is also yet to finish outside the first three in four career starts and has not been seen on course since boxing on for a credible third in the Group 3 Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 11th.

Understandably keen to saddle the rising three-year-old to black type success, co-trainer Michael Hawkes told Racing Ahead he believes Lake Geneva was unlucky not to win her first race; the Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m) on January 31st in which she was caught wide and still finished second by the bob of a head.

“She probably is the best maiden in Australia obviously placing in the Diamond and the Slipper as well,” Hawkes said.

“She looks fabulous and she’s a lot stronger, she’s grown a little bit but what you see is what you get with her.

“She’s ticking over nicely. Obviously the acceptances for the Golden Rose are today and she’s still there.

“Obviously we’re trying to win a race with her first-up and go forward.

“Unfortunately the day I though she ran here at Rosehill and was caught three deep and just got beaten by the bob of a head, it was just outstanding from a bad draw. Had she drawn a barrier she just would have won and won easy.”

Electing to saddle the filly in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) only second-up in autumn, Team Hawkes were rewarded for the decision with the talented filly boxed on for a credible third; producing undoubtedly her most impressive performance when third in the major Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) a month later.

Boom colt Vancouver remains clear $3 favourite in early 2015 Golden Rose betting markets, ahead of two-time Group 1 champion Pride Of Dubai ($7).

Lake Geneva can be taken at a particularly generous $17 to win the 2015 Golden Rose Stakes.
