Brian Smith’s recent Brisbane Cup winner Jetset Lad is one of the headline nominations taken for Saturday’s Tattersall’s Mile 2015 at Doomben Racecourse.
The sole Black Type taking place in the Sunshine State this weekend, the $100,000 Listed Tattersall’s Mile Handicap (1640m) has this year attracted 16 nominees.
Among those are three seven-year-olds including Smith’s Eagle Farm based Elusive City gelding Jetset Lad.
A winner of eight of his 59 career starts to date the veteran galloper has been in top form this Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.
In late May he ran third to Faust in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2020m) before winning the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2200m) on June 6 by a nose.
Last time out he travelled from Brisbane to the Gold Coast on June 20 and crossed fifth when beaten one and a half lengths by the winner Additive Habit in the listed Southbank Handicap (1800m) on Tattersall’s Tiara Day.
The other veterans in among the nominations are Greg Bennett’s Cape Cross gelding Kaypers and the Kelly Schweida-trained son of Stratum Epic who was fourth in the Southbank Handicap before a last start sixth over the mile at the Sunshine Coast.
Smith meanwhile has also nominated for the top-rated Kingdoms, a five-year-old High Chaparral gelding who ran third to Opinion in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick last Spring.
Kingdoms, who has had 18 starts and winning form up to 2400m, hasn’t raced since Caulfield Cup Day in October when sixth to Godolphin star Contributer in the Group 3 Coongy Handicap (2000m).
Only one last start winner is nominated for the Tattersall’s Mile with Tony Gollan’s Stratum five-year-old Trakstar having won the Troy Trevitt Homes Open Handicap (1600m) at the Sunshine Coast on a Soft (7) on July 4.
He held on to win by a neck that day and defeated Little Brown Horse, Kelly Doughty’s Waterford Road mare also nominated for this weekend’s Doomben feature.
Other Tattersall’s Mile hopes coming off good lead-up form include fourth in the same Sunshine Coast lead-up Avalanches, four-year-old Dubawi Dream and Tracey’s Angel who won over the mile at Doomben two back before a second at the same track and distance last Saturday.
Also in the mix are the likes of Savabeel five-year-old Shotover River who ran fourth over 2200m at Doomben on June 27 after a failure in the Ipswich Cup behind Danchai and Gollan’s second entry Tornado Miss.
Runner-up behind Frespanol in the Listed Spear Chief Handicap (1630m) in Brisbane on May 30, the four-year-old daughter of Snitzel was last seen crossing sixth in the Southbank Handicap that she’s tipped to improve on getting back down to a distance she boasts a strong record over (9-3-2-0).
