Haussmann Heads 2015 Winter Stakes Nominations

The John O’Shea-trained Civic Stakes winner Haussmann is nominated for a winter Black Type double attempt this weekend in the Winter Stakes 2015 at Rosehill Gardens.

Nominations for this year’s $100,000 Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) are extended until 11am (AEST) on Tuesday morning after 15 early entries were taken for the sole Sydney Black Type to run on Saturday.

Of the current Winter Stakes nominees one of the top rated is Godolphin’s Commands five-year-old Haussmann who won the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) at the track on July 4.

Improving on his lead-up form into that race the gelding appreciated a Heavy (8) track and now shoots for successive winter stakes wins this weekend.

Heading the Winter Stakes nominations numbers-wise is Sydney’s leading trainer Chris Waller with a total of four entries.

Waller has entered the Irish-bred Diametric, returning six-year-old Instrumentalist who hasn’t raced since winning back-to-back summer races over 2400m last year, Rugged Cross and You’ll Never.

Cape Cross six-year-old Rugged Cross ran third in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) at the start of last month and was last seen running two and three quarter lengths away fourth to Haussmann in the Civic Stakes in the mud.

Fellow in-form stablemate You’ll Never won two on the trot to kick off his campaign in May over 1350m and 1400m respectively at Rosehill before two more runs at the track for two thirds last month

The latest of those was on June 27 on a Heavy course in the Perfection fresh Handicap (1500m) crossing one and a half lengths off the Danny O’Brien-trained winner Beauty’s Beast who thrived with only 47kg.

There are three mares nominated to take on the field of geldings in the Winter Stakes this season with the Heath Conners-trained Fastnet Rock four-year-old Refer who was seventh in the Civic Stakes last time out after better form earing in Group company on firmer tracks in Sydney, Brisbane and Ipswich; Peter Moody’s last start Randwick winner over the mile in the mud Nolea’s Choice who is a four-year-old daughter of Sebring; and Two Blue.

Prepared by Wyong’s Kristen Buchanan, Dubleo six-year-old Two Blue has a good record over this track and distance with two seconds from four previous runs and was narrowly beaten last time out when second to Haussmann in the Civic Stakes.

Other notable Winter Stakes nominees include the Gai Waterhouse-trained Redoute’s Choice four-year-old Liberty’s Choice who hasn’t run since a Group 2 Crystal Mile sixth at Moonee Valley last Cox Plate Day and Joe Pride’s veteran Danzero eight-year-old See The World.

Despite his age, See The World comes into the Winter Stakes in top form having run third to Timeless Prince over 1200m on a Heavy (10) Randwick track in the Winter Dash on June 20 and then a third in the Civic Stakes that could prove the form line to follow into this weekend.
