2015 Cox Plate Aim for Arod

UK raider Arod could be on a Cox Plate 2015 mission in Melbourne this coming Spring Racing Carnival after the smart bay galloper’s win at Ascot over the weekend.

Prepared by Peter Chapple-Hyam, a dual Epsom Derby winning horseman, Teofilo four-year-old Arod on Saturday won Group 2 Summer Mile Stakes (1600m) in a one and a half-length effort over Lightning Spear to salute for the punters.

The impressive all-the-way success was his fourth win from 10 career runs to date and undoubtedly his best, Arod having come off a Group 3 win at Epsom Downs the previous month in one of the Derby Day support races.

Now the up-and-comer could be Victorian-bound with Chapple-Hyam considering a campaign down under targeting Australasia’s weight-for-age championship, the $3 million Group 1 W.S. Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 24.

Twelve months ago Arod ran in the Group 1 Epsom Derby but failed to see out a strong 2400m when crossing fourth behind the Aidan O’Brien-trained winner Australia.

Over less distance however he’s been thriving over the last year for his connections at the Sheikh Fahad Al Thani-owned Qatar Racing Limited who won the 2011 Melbourne Cup with French-trained raider Dunaden and the 2013 Mackinnon Stakes with Side Glance.

“He has to have fast ground and he has improved again since Epsom,” Chapple-Hyam said according to Racing Victoria.

“We will see how he comes out of this race but we will have to look at the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood now.

“Longer term we will look at heading down to Australia as Sheikh Fahad has mentioned the Cox Plate.”

Arod is yet to be officially added to the futures Cox Plate odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, the all-in markets led by Hong Kong’s Able Friend ($7), the Godolphin-owned Contributer ($8) and internationally-performed Lindsay Park galloper Criterion ($9).

The £1 million Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes (1609m) runs at Goodwood on July 29 and is also a possible aim for early Cox Plate favourite Able Friend and the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Criterion who was last seen running fifth to Free Eagle in the Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Ascot.
