2015 VRC Winter Championship Series Final Field

One of the major black-types on the bumper nine-race program at Flemington for Finals Day this weekend is the Winter Championship Series Final 2015 that has attracted a capacity field of milers.

Due to run as Race 7 at 3:30pm (AEST), this year’s edition of the $150,000 Listed VRC-CRV Winter Championship Series Final (1600m) features a full 16 confirmed starters plus four emergencies.

Sitting top of the Winter Championship Series Final field and weights with the big 60kg allocation is the Chris Waller-trained Amovatio who Damien Oliver is down to ride from barrier 14, into 10 if all the emergencies come out.

The in-form Al Maher four-year-old has a good record over the mile with two wins, a second and a third from five previous 1600m runs but he hasn’t been over the distance this year.

Amovatio comes off a 1400m Flemington win with Oliver aboard on 57.5kg from June 27 so the lead-up is good but he’ll be needing to improve with the extra kilos this Saturday.

Following Amovatio in the weights are then the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Tried And Tired (59.5kg) and Robert Smerdon’s Mr Utopia (59kg).

Niello five-year-old Tried And Tired comes off a second over 1400m at Caulfield last Saturday when carrying the same weight so is on the short back-up while Dwayne Dunn’s mount Mr Utopia was sixth to Amovatio last time out.

The only other last start winner in the mix meanwhile is the Brett Scott-trained Coronation Shallan who has drawn a horror barrier (18) as he shoots for back-to-back victories after a 1600m win at Ballarat on July 1.

Other horses that ran well last time out but who have suffered a blow with a nasty Winter Championship Series Final barrier draw are Henwood (19) and Venture On (17).

Getting in on 55.5kg, the same weight he had last time out, John Sadler’s Savabeel six-year-old Henwood ran third behind Charmed Harmony in the same Caulfield race that produces Tried And Tired last weekend.

Venture On is prepared by Warrnambool horseman Mitchell Freedman and is another six-year-old with form around Amovatio having run a close third behind Saturday’s top weight a fortnight ago.

A big winner barrier-wise is 52-start veteran Ventic prepared by Byron Cozamanis who has barrier two and has run top three in his past five starts, while the best of the emergencies is the Peter Moody-trained Kenjorwood.

If there is a scratching from the Winter Championship Series Final field Kenjorwood will get the call-up, the super-consistent Snippetson gelding drawn the rails and coming off a string of top Melbourne runs including a third behind Digitalism over 2040m at Moonee Valley from the start of June.
