Patrick Payne’s in-form three-year-old Husson Eagle has suffered an early blow with a wide draw for Saturday’s AR Creswick Series Final 2015 at Flemington Racecourse as he chases his third win from four starts this time in.
Due to jump as Race 2 at 12:20pm (AEST) on the full nine-race program in Melbourne this weekend, the $120,000 Listed A.R. Creswick Series Final (1200m) is a set weights plus penalties race for three-year-olds and has attracted a final field of nine.
Three of those engaged to face off in the lucrative black-type come off a last start win including Husson Eagle who jockey Steven Arnold will ride from barrier eight.
Group 1 performed back in November at the track last year when a brave fifth behind Chris Waller’s now internationally performed star colt Brazen Beau in the Coolmore Stud Stakes, Husson Eagle returned in early April for a first-up win at Caulfield.
He backed up in May in the Group 2 Euclase Stakes (1200m) in Adelaide running under two lengths away fourth to Nicoscene before his last start back at Flemington where he won again over 1000m.
Having had four starts over the 1200m, Husson Eagle has posted just the one third place finish so will need to handle the distance if he is to overcome the gate and win off the back of his stellar lead-up form.
Also coming off wins are Our Harmony and the Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained Rough Justice, both also eligible for the $10,000 Super VOBIS bonus in the race.
The David Brideoake-trained Our Harmony has won three of her past four starts, the Nadeem filly last seen beating home a field of her own kind over 1100m at Caulfield only last Saturday.
She is on the short back-up and rises in class taking on the boys here, apprentice Harry Coffey staying on.
He rode her to victory seven days ago on Saturday carrying 56.5kg with the claim and she will appreciate carrying only 55.5kg in the AR Creswick.
Rough Justice meanwhile is drawn a treat in gate three with Damien Oliver booked to ride the Wanted gelding, Oliver replacing Katelyn Mallyon in the saddle who has used her apprentice status for the youngster’s three latest runs.
He ran second in two of those over 1000m at Mornington and Flemington respectively, including behind Husson Eagle on June 13, before winning on June 27 back at the track defeating Lord Esprit by half a length over 1100m.
Ellerton & Zahra have also accepted for Face Forward in gate six with Dwayne Dunn booked to ride the Charge Forward filly in her 10th career start as she shoots for her fifth win.
She comes off a fifth to Rough Justice but has an ace record at Flemington (4-2-1-0) and the 1200m (5-2-1-0).
Other notable hopes including perennial fourth placegetter Illustrious Lad who Craig Williams rides form the inside alley and Mick Price’s Bel Esprit gelding Valderrama having just his third career start.
