Haussmann Upset 2015 Civic Stakes Winner

The John O’Shea-trained Haussmann made the most of an inside alley in Saturday’s Civic Stakes 2015 at Rosehill Gardens to score an exciting win in the Sydney winter feature as a double-figure roughie.

A dozen sprinters lined-up in this year’s $100,000 Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) with the dominant favourite in betting being the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained WJ Healy Stakes winner Dothraki ($2.50).

The Mossman four-year-old however could only manage to finish three lengths away sixth to the upset Civic Stakes winner Haussmann, who jockey Christian Reith gave a gun run from barrier one in the middle distance sprint, after getting caught three wide without cover throughout.

Coming off a fifth over 1400m at the same track from June 13, Commands five-year-old Haussmann ($15) enjoyed his second win from four starts over 1350m at Rosehill with a neck to spare over Kristen Buchanan’s in-form Two Blue ($6.50) on the line after running down the frontrunner.

Rounding out the Civic Stakes trifecta this winter a further two and a half lengths away in third was then the Joe Pride-trained veteran Danzero eight-year-old See The World ($11), third in the Winter Dash on a mud Randwick track the run before.

“Haussmann really wanted to win today,” winning hoop Reith said post-victory on Saturday.

“He took the run and showed a lot of determination to win.”

O’Shea, who has enjoyed a stellar season as the private trainer of racing powerhouse Godolphin, also won last year’s Civic Stakes with Generalife and is over the moon with the last 12 months.

“We were only thinking earlier today that last year Generalife got on the board in this race and was one of our first good winners,” O’Shea told The Sunday Telegraph.

“If you asked me 12 months prior would you take what you have achieved, I would have taken it with both hands. We would have been happy with less so it has been a good season for us.”

Far from becoming complacent however O’Shea is already looking for where things could be better ahead of the spring.

“To be fair, there is room for improvement,” he said.

Next up for the Civic Stakes winner Haussmann is the $100,000 Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) back at Rosehill Gardens in a fortnight as the sprinter looks to complete the same double O’Shea achieved with Generalife last winter.

“Haussmann might be suspect beyond 1350m but he is fit and well and we will give him his chance in that race,” O’Shea said.

“It has been a great team effort to get this horse back winning again. He has been flying, really enjoying his work at Osborne Park, he’s a very happy horse.”

While happy with the performance of Reith in the Civic Stakes, he will be replaced in the Winter Stakes by stable hoop and current Sydney jockeys’ premiership leader James McDonald who returns from Europe in time for the run.

“We are counting the days for ‘Macca’ to get back into town — he has a premiership to chase,” O’Shea said.

“He is due back around July 14 and I can tell you he will be straight off the plane and back to work — there will be no detours.”
