The headline race of the annual festival, this year’s $150,000 Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) attracted 23 early entries with Manduro six-year-old Bonfire sitting top of the weights with 59kg.

After a first-up fourth in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m), Bonfire was last seen running second behind Kapour as the well-beaten favourite when four and a half lengths off the winner in the Listed Winter Cup (2400m) in the wet at Rosehill on June 27.

For both those runs the horse had the same 59kg he is allocated for next Thursday’s Grafton Cup where he will look to salute third-up for his first win over further than 2100m.

Following Bonfire in the Grafton Cup weights this winter are then the Bevan Laming-trained Banca Mo (58.5kg), Bagman (58kg) for Chris Waller and Brian Smith’s Jetset Lad (58kg).

Runner-up in the Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m) two back, Laming’s Tough Speed seven-year-old Banca Mo was last seen with 58.5kg on the Gold Coast when fourth behind Escado in the Group 3 Tatt’s Cup (2400m).

Fellow veteran, eight-year-old Easy Rocking gelding Bagman ran second over 2000m at Rosehill on June 13 and is down to run again this weekend only five days out from the Grafton Cup with the 60kg top weight in Caulfield’s $80,000 Spicer Thoroughbreds Handicap (2000m) in Melbourne.

Jetset Lad meanwhile ran fifth in black type over 1800m at home on the Gold Coast on June 20 after winning the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2200m) at Doomben the start before but will need to be improving going up from 53kg in Brisbane and 56.5kg at the Gold Coast if accepted for Grafton.

There are six last start winners among the Grafton Cup nominations this year including the Ciaron Maher-trained Kapour (56kg) who kept his trainer’s incredible winter winning streak going with a victory over Bonfire in the Winter Cup last weekend on a Heavy (8) track.

Also coming off a win is Waller’s Choisir six-year-old Reigning who beat Bagman home on June 13 with 54kg and who is allocated just half a kilo more for the Grafton showdown.

Along with Bagman and Reigning, Sydney’s premier trainer Waller’s other Grafton Cup nominees for 2015 are his recent Ipswich Cup winner Danchai (55.5kg) who ran third in the Winter Cup and imported mare Gosh (54kg) coming off a fourth in the same Rosehill lead-up.

Other notable Grafton Cup nominations include Ruth Cooper’s Grafton Cup Prelude winner Mullet Man who will get in well in the weights with just 54kg, the Gerald Ryan-trained Tatt’s Cup runner-up Shoreham (56.5kg), and the David Vandyke-trained duo of Archean and Maurus who are both last start winning four-year-olds up in class.
