The feature race across the country this weekend is Melbourne’s Monash Stakes 2015 at Caulfield Racecourse, betting tips for the weight-for-age sprint found below.
Set to run as Caulfield Race 8 at 4:09pm (AEST), the field is down to 12 for the $150,000 Group 3 PFD Food Services Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) following the early scratching of #7 O’Malley.
Of the dozen left, race favourite in the Monash Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au is Lord Of The Sky.
Robbie Laing’s multiple Group 1 placegetter won the race 12 months ago but hasn’t been in the winner’s stall again since, and is on the drift out from $1.90 to $2 to go back-to-back in the Monash Stakes.
He is drawn wide in gate 11 with Damien Oliver in the saddle and has finished runner-up in Group 1 company at his last two starts firstly in the TJ Smith Stakes in Sydney and then The Goodwood in Adelaide.
Also at single figures in the latest Monash Stakes odds are the Peter Moody-trained mare Angels Beach ($7) and Robert Smerdon’s Group 1 The Galaxy runner-up last year Anatina ($9) while up-and-coming filly Wild Rain has firmed in from $11 to $9.50 after a gun gate four draw.
So do the bookies have it right or is there an upset Sir John Monash Stakes result on the card this weekend from a longer priced hope such as flying Adelaide visitor Heart Of A Lion ($11) or the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Commands mare Minaj ($16)?
#1 Lord Of The Sky ($2)
Lots to like about the consistency and class of the defending champ despite the fact he’s been winless over the past 12 months. Saluted in this race last year and has the right lead-up form to go back-to-back. He was only a nose off champion Chautauqua in Randwick’s TJ Smith in April and was second last start in The Goodwood at Morphettville in mid-May. Has been freshened-up since and Oliver is back aboard at a track this horse loves (8-5-0-0) so with the right run from the wide gate he’ll be hard to beat.
#13 Wild Rain ($9.50)
Faring better in the barriers with gate four is Mark Kavanagh’s three-year-old daughter of Manhattan Rain who takes on the older horses here. She’s won two of her past three, most recently over 1000m at Moonee Valley by a tidy two and a half lengths on June 20. She did it from a similar gate (5) that day and while this is a rise in class, the fact she’s drawn a treat in a race with speed on and Glen Boss stays on puts her right in the mix.
#2 Riziz ($19)
For value, can’t go past the consistent Ken Sweeney-trained Adelaide visitor Riziz. This six-year-old Zariz gelding was runner-up in three straight races during March and April before failing to fire when second last (16th) behind Flamberge in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) on May 16. Out to atone for that with this trip to Melbourne and has the class to do so over a distance he runs well over (10-2-2-3). Should be finishing off nicely with the speed to suit drawn one inside of Lord Of The Sky.
