One of the last remaining Sydney black-types of the winter racing season, this year’s $100,000 Civic Stakes (1350m) has attracted a bumper 17 nominations including Team Snowden’s Mossman four-year-old Dothraki.

In top form last spring – summer season, the gelding returned with a disappointing mid-field finish when eighth behind That’s A Good Idea in the Listed Ortensia Stakes (1100m) at Scone in May.

He improved on that on June 20 last time out however to win the Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes (1200m) on the Gold Coast, form he’s now looking to bring back to Sydney this Saturday.

Joining Dothraki in the Civic Stakes nominations for the Snowdens is five-year-old Choisir mare Rose Of Choice who ran fourth in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) at Doomben at the start of the month before her failed 12th behind the flying Srikandi in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) last time out.

There are two other last start winners among the early entries along with Dothraki, both the Gregory Hickman-trained Private Secretary who won over 1200m at Randwick a month back and six-year-old Two Blue for Wyong’s Kristen Buchanan after back-to-back wins if accepted.

Last year’s winning trainer John O’Shea enjoyed success with a last start Rosehill winner Generalife who went on to also win the Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) back at the track a fortnight later, this year’s edition of the same race to run at Caulfield Racecourse on July 25.

O’Shea returns in 2015 with two nominees in Commands gelding Haussmann out to improve on a fifth at Rosehill over 1400m from June 13 and four-year-old Medcaut racing for the first time since a disappointing 10th to Tales Of Grimm in the Listed Scone Cup (1600m) from May 15.

Also with dual nominees is Gerald Ryan who has entered his Snitzel gelding Dances On Stars who ran a credible fourth to Dothraki in the WJ Healy last time out and stablemate Estonian Princess who has run poorly in her three most recent runs in Queensland including a Tattersall’s Tiara 13th.

Among the other more highly rated hopes are Chris Waller’s honest galloper Rugged Cross and the Paul Perry-trained Wouldn’t It Be Nice.

British import Rugged Cross is a six-year-old son of Cape Cross who ran third to Sons Of John in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) two back on June 7.

After that solid effort over the mile he was stepped back to 1500m for a run at Rosehill last Saturday on a Heavy (8) track where he could only manage to finish fifth behind Beauty’s Beast.

The Newcastle-based Wouldn’t It Be Nice meanwhile will be on a two week not one week back-up if he lines up in Saturday’s Civic Stakes field, the four-year-old son of Choisir having won the Listed June Stakes (1100m) as a $21 chance two back.

After beating home subsequent Tattersall’s Tiara runner-up Avoid Lightning home in the June Stakes, Wouldn’t It Be Nice ran again on June 20 on a mud Randwick track rated a Heavy (10) when fifth to Timeless Prince in the Winter Dash (1200m).
