Taking place early on the Saturday race card as Rosehill 4 at 1:45pm (AEST), this year’s $100,000 Listed Ronald McDonald House Westmead Winter Cup (2400m) features a final field of just seven stayers.

Heading the Winter Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au are the Chris Waller-trained Ipswich Cup winner Danchai ($2.40) who is up in weights shooting for back-to-back cup wins this time from the inside alley and Gai Waterhouse’s 59kg top weight Bonfire ($2.80) out one wider in gate two.

There’s also single figures being offered in the Winter Cup betting markets for both the Grafton Cup-bound Dream Folk ($6.50) who in-form apprentice Winona Costin rides on the 54kg minimum as well as another of Waller’s three in the mix Our Voodoo Prince ($8) in the outside alley.

So do the bookies have it right or is there an upset Winter Cup result on the card this weekend as Waller looks to run the trifecta after his first four in the race 12 months ago?

#3 Our Voodoo Prince ($8)

Waller shoots for back-to-back wins but while the bookies say Danchai is his best chance the master horseman and the Races.com.au team can’t ignore the value on offer for this Kingmambo seven-year-old. He’s drawn the outside but it’s over 2400m and there’s only six in the field to beat. Jockey Tye Angland won last year and can do it again on this galloper who is back to his pet distance (8-1-0-3) after a brave effort to finish second in the Stayers Cup (3200m) over the two miles at Randwick last start. He had 59kg that day but is down to 55kg here and his last 2400m run was on May 23 when third in the Listed WJ McKell Cup run in the mud. Lots to like and lots of value.

#1 Bonfire ($2.80)

In gate two with Danny Beasley aboard is Waterhouse’s Manduro six-year-old who is carrying the hefty top weight but is full of class. This import is yet to win over 2400m but has won up to 2100m and goes well at Rosehill with two seconds at the track from as many previous starts here. Was competitive during the spring in Melbourne including a Group 3 third in the Naturalism Stakes at Caulfield and should be improving second-up after catching the eye when under three lengths away fourth in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) over a mile at the start of the month with the same jockey and weight as Saturday.

#2 Danchai ($2.40)

Number one in the markets, Waller’s in-form grey cannot be left out. Two back was third over 1800m at this track before his Listed Ipswich Cup (215m) victory over Banca Mo on June 13. Beat some notable types there but had 54kg and goes up to 55.5kg for this. Remains a danger though based on the recent form, Waller’s record and the fact there’s not many going around in this compared to him beating 12 home in Queensland last time out.
