Seven Horse 2015 ATC Winter Cup Field Released

Just seven horses are set to face off in the weekend’s sole black-type race down under with a diminutive field accepted for Rosehill’s ATC Winter Cup 2015 in Sydney.

Set to run as Rosehill Gardens Race 4 at 1:45pm (AEST) this year’s $100,000 Listed Ronald McDonald House Westmead Winter Cup (2400m) has only seven runners including three from the star stables of Chris Waller.

Waller trained the first four over the line in last year’s Winter Cup result and originally nominated seven gallopers in 2015.

His contingent however is down to three as he shoots for successive wins in the feature race and is led by the rails-drawn Danchai.

Due to be ridden by Hugh Bowman from barrier one, in-form import Danchai chases back-to-back wins after his win in the Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m) on June 13.

In that run the Authorized six-year-old carried just 54kg to victory with apprentice Luke Tarrant in the saddle but will need to improve this weekend going up in the weights to 55.5kg.

Also weighted above the 54kg minimum in the Winter Cup for Waller is Our Voodoo Prince, a Tye Angland mount drawn the outside alley in gate seven – Angland having won last year’s edition aboard Secessio.

Our Voodoo Prince carries 55kg, the seven-year-old son of Kingmambo also coming off nice lead-up form.

Two back on May 23 he handled a Heavy (9) Randwick track to cross third behind Sense Of Occasion in the Listed WJ McKell Cup (2400m) before stepping up to the two miles back at the track on June 6 when runner-up behind Lovethebeaches in the Stayers Cup (3200m).

The veteran was beaten five lengths in that staying test and how he handles dropping back to the mile and a half on Saturday will be key to his chances in the Winter Cup.

Waller’s third and final hope in the handicap clash is Gosh, another European import who jumps from barrier three with Glyn Schofield riding on 54kg.

A five-year-old Peintre Celebre mare, Gosh is after her first win down under having finished sixth or worse in her three Sydney runs so far including a dead last when ninth behind Vergara last time out over 1500m at Rosehill.

She’s set to appreciate the step up in distance this weekend however and will also enjoy coming back from 60kg that she failed to carry round on May 30 first-up.

The ATC Winter Cup weights this year are led by the Gai Waterhouse-trained Bonfire who carries 59kg and jumps from barrier two with Danny Beasley booked for the ride.

A six-year-old Manduro gelding, Bonfire is second-up on Saturday after returning with a brave fourth behind Sons Of John in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Cup (1600m) on June 7 where he had the same weight and jockey as this Saturday.

While Bonfire is yet to win second-up his form two runs in is solid with two seconds and a third from five previous starts.

One of the other sure-to-be favourites in Winter Cup betting at this year is the Gregory Hickman-trained Dream Folk in barrier six with apprentice Winona Costin retaining the ride.

Dream Ballad gelding Dream Folk is heading towards a run in the $150,000 Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) on July 9 and was last seen running third behind Reigning over 2000m at the track on June 13.

He was beaten only a quarter length that day and with winning form up to 2400m is set to enjoy getting back up to the mile and a half.

Rounding out the Winter Cup field are then the Ciaron Maher-trained Kapour (barrier four) who Kerrin McEvoy rides taking over for Dwayne Dunn and Rapa Nui from the Hawkesbury stables of Wanda Ings.
