Trainer Gregory Hickman hasn’t ruled out a Ramornie Handicap 2015 assignment at Grafton next month for his smart mare Private Secretary who is down to run at Rosehill Gardens this weekend.
The five-year-old daughter of Husson, a winner of seven of her dozen starts to date including three from five this preparation, is only lightly raced for her age and will look to add to her solid record when running in an $85,000 Benchmark 85 Handicap (1200m) on Saturday.
There she will be seeking back-to-back wins after taking out a Benchmark 80 over 1200m at Royal Randwick on June 6 with apprentice Winona Costin in the saddle.
Costin retains the ride at Rosehill on Saturday, Hickman happy to keep the young hoop aboard both Private Secretary and his 2015 Grafton Cup hope Dream Folk who runs in the $100,000 Listed ATC Winter Cup (2400m) at the same meeting.
All of Hickman’s five most recent winners were guided to victory by Costin, including Centro Superior who won at Goulburn on Monday.
In line to take out her first Sydney apprentices premiership this season, Costin’s other wins for Hickman since late May have been aboard Centro Superior (Nowra), Private Secretary (Randwick), Top Striker (Nowra) and Braces (Taree).
“The stable is having some good success with Winona, she is riding very well,” Hickman told The Daily Telegraph yesterday.
Dream Ballard gelding Dream Folk is all but confirmed for a shot at the $150,000 Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) on July 9, and Hickman is still looking at also taking Private Secretary to the Grafton Cup Carnival for the sprint feature of the festival.
Run one day before the Grafton Cup, the $150,000 Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) is held on Wednesday July 8 and could be on the agenda for Private Secretary if she steps up on Saturday.
Hickman however admitted a spell post-Saturday was the more likely option for the mare who is in line for a trip to the Gold Coast for next year’s Magic Millions Carnival in January.
“The Ramornie is in the back of my mind but we will get through Rosehill first,” he said.
“Private Secretary will get into this race well after Winona’s 2kg and I’ve been very happy with her progress since she won at Randwick.
“She will have to go to the paddock soon as I’d like to get her ready for the Magic Millions carnival in January but when a mare like her is racing in such good form you have to consider all the options.”
