Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Victoria Derby 2015 at Flemington Racecourse this Melbourne Cup Carnival could be a long term goal for David Payne’s improving youngster Over The Air who races at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.
A maiden who has finished in the money just once in his three career starts to date, the rising three-year-old Artie Schiller gelding is a dual nominee for Sydney this weekend.
Over The Air was last seen crossing second to Heartlings over 1500m at the track on May 8 and is entered for both the $85,000 Significant Stakes (1900m) and an $85,000 2YO Handicap (1400m) over less distance at Rosehill Racecourse for his fourth run.
The Significant Stakes, which also offers a $20,000 BOBS Bonus to qualified horses, is open to both two and three-year-olds.
Payne however is the only trainer to nominate for a juvenile with the remaining 13 nominees for the set weights clash all three-year-olds including the Peter Moody-trained son of Snitzel It’s About You, in-form stablemate Got You Double chasing his third win on the trot and Anthony Cummings’ last start winner over 1800m at the track Skyline Blush.
“If they’ve got the genes why not run them,” Payne told AAP speaking of the two-year-old staying types and other trainers’ reluctance to test youngsters over more metres.
“The Melbourne Cup is the richest race in the country and we don’t breed or develop the stayers.
“It doesn’t make sense.”
The Randwick-based trainer is happy to take on the three-year-olds with the Significant Stakes the confirmed weekend target for the promising Over The Air who hit the line strongly after getting blocked for a run heading into the straight in the Significant Prelude last time out when ridden by Glyn Schofield.
Payne is confident Over The Air can develop into a genuine staying type during his three-year-old season later this year and has him earmarked as a possible contender for the $1.5 million Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington Racecourse on October 31.
“He will be better later but this will give us something to go by,” Payne, who is yet to prepare a Victoria Derby winner, said of the horse who had his final piece of work on Tuesday morning.
“If he steps up we can then set him for the Victoria Derby and other staying races.
“He is a nice relaxed horse which you need for a stayer. It means they don’t use too much energy.”
