Simenon Considered for Melbourne Cup 2015

Fourth behind Fiorente in the 2013 Melbourne Cup, connections of the now eight-year-old veteran Irish galloper Simenon are looking at a return trip down under for a shot at this year’s famous Flemington feature on the first Tuesday of November.

The Willie Mullins-trained Simenon travelled to Australia for a two run campaign two years ago.

He first ran third behind Sea Moon in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield before his brave fourth when beaten only 2.5 lengths as a 20/1 shot behind the Gai Waterhouse-trained French import Fiorente in the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m).

From there he backed up and ran fifth to local star Dominant in the 2013 Hong Kong Vase as a $50 roughie, his form back on track again this preparation including his big run at Royal Ascot over the weekend.

Ridden by James Doyle, the veteran stayer finished a credible fourth to the Ed Dunlop-trained up-and-comer Trip To Paris in the Group 1 Gold Cup (4000m) at Ascot and could now join that same horse on a trip to Melbourne during the spring.

It was a great result from the galloper, placed in the last three editions of the Gold Cup, who had been sidelined with injury throughout most of 2014.

“It was great to see him back to form,” owner Nick Peacock said according to Racing Victoria.

“We could look at Melbourne again, but the most important thing first is to see how he comes out of the race.”

Also looking at a Melbourne Cup run in 2015 with a possible shot at Australasia’s weight-for-age championship, the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley in October in the lead-up is the Mark Johnston-trained Fire Fighting.

The galloper ran third behind Mashoob in the Listed Wolferton Handicap over the weekend at Royal Ascot, a race that has produced a number of genuine Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival hopes over the years including Forgotten Voice and Greatwood.

“We’ve had a load of people looking at him for Australia and we might look at planning a campaign based around going there,” Johnson said.

“We might think about the Cox Plate in the run-up to the Melbourne Cup.”
