2015 Winter Cup Nominations: Seven for Waller

Sydney’s top trainer Chris Waller trained the first four over the line in the same race 12 months ago and returns with seven nominations for the Winter Cup 2015 at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

Secessio led Waller’s quartet in the $100,000 Listed ATC Winter Cup (2400m) last season but is absent from the 13 nominations taken for the quality handicap clash this weekend.

Waller has a stranglehold over the early entries with seven hopefuls in the mix including three last start winners.

The horses from the stable seeking back-to-back wins if accepted into the Winter Cup field when final acceptances close on Wednesday morning are Excites six-year-old Black Jag who won over 2500m at Flemington on June 13, Danchai and Reigning.

Authorized gelding Danchai has won just three of his 23 career starts to date but enjoyed black type success in Queensland a fortnight ago when beating home Banca Mo by a long neck in the Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m).

Fellow six-year-old Reigning also won on the same day, the Choisir gelding defeating stablemate Bagman in the $85,000 Schweppes Handicap (2000m) at Rosehill, a race that also produces fellow Winter Cup hopeful Dream Folk, heading towards the $15,000 Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) next month, who ran third.

Bagman is another big name Winter Cup chance for Waller, the Group 1 performed Easy Rocking eight-year-old after his first win since August last year.

Rounding out the Waller Winter Cup contingent are Irish-bred mare Gosh who is yet to finish better than sixth in her three runs down under this year, fellow import Trade Commissioner who ran sixth to Reigning in the Schweppes Handicap in the lead-up and Our Voodoo Prince coming off a second over the two miles at Randwick in the Stayers Cup (3200m) from June 6.

Another ace Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse meanwhile has nominated for her Manduro gelding Bonfire, the galloper to race second-up after finishing under three lengths away fourth to Sons Of John in the rescheduled Group 3 Hawkesbury Cup (1600m) on June 7 in his first run since October last year.

Other notable nominees include Joe Pride’s four-year-old Teofilo mare Missvonn who ran fifth to Reigning last time out after a 1900m Rosehill win in late May carrying 58kg and Kapour for in-form Caulfield horseman Ciaron Maher.

Maher enjoyed a big win last Saturday at the Gold Coast with his ace Dubawi mare Srikandi pushing her earnings out over $2.17 million with a win in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) that followed her success in Queensland’s richest race – the $2 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) run this year at Doomben on June 6.
