Wet Track Could Dash Hazard’s Tattersall’s Tiara Chances

Talented mare Hazard has undoubtedly found career-best form to date through her current preparation but trainer Lee Freedman is unsure how she will perform in Saturday’s Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) should the Gold Coast course continue to experience inclement weather.

Hazard won a minor Sandown race over 1000m with ease first-up on April 1st but has been most impressive in continuing to deliver at black type level; taking out each of the Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) most recently.

While thrilled with the condition of the Flying Spur mare in the lead-up to the 2015 Tattersall’s Tiara, Freedman conceded the five-year-old is not at her best on rain-affected surfaces and is hoping for sunshine over the coming days.

“We’re very pleased with her, we’re just a bit worried about the rain in Queensland, I don’t think her form on soft ground is as good as it is on firm,” Freedman told Racing Ahead.

“Hopefully they get a bit of that warm winter sunshine up there and it can come back to something that’s reasonable.

“I will alert the punters by saying that she’s a far better mare on top of the ground.”

Having joined brother Anthony in a training partnership at the beginning of the year, Freedman cannot fault the fortitude of Hazard and is confident of another brave performance in the Tattersall’s Tiara rain, hail or shine.

“I can’t put my finger on it, other than she’s a more mature mare and she’s had little or no issues this time in,” he said.

“She’s a very strong mare, she takes her work well, she’s a great eater and enjoys her work.

“She’s continued to improve and improve and improve and now she’s gone up to the sunshine in Queensland, she took it to another level the other day.”

Hazard has been confirmed amongst a talent-rich and capacity field of 16 runners in the 2015 Tattersall’s Tiara final field.
