Twenty-four talented fillies and mares have been included in nominations for Saturday’s featured Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) on the Gold Coast; highlighted by the pending appearance of several previous winners at the highest level.
Popular mare Catkins has returned to racing in close to career-best form this time and is primed for a maiden Group 1 victory in the 2015 Tattersall’s Tiara.
Finishing outside the first three only a handful of times through her 33 career starts so far, Catkins remains arguably the country’s best current racehorse yet to post a Group 1 victory.
Returning this year for consecutive wins in the Group 2 Breeders’ Classic (1200m) and Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m), the daughter of Dubawi ran second to 2014 Tattersall’s Tiara champion Cosmic Endeavour in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) on March 7th; returning to the winner’s circle in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) on March 28th.
Again finishing second in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) on Day 2 of The Championships, Catkins returned to racing for second in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) a fortnight ago and will be tough to beat on Saturday.
Lumosty failed to justify her resounding favouritism when tenth in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) on June 6th but if sure to relish a step-up in distance and step back to fillies and mares company in the 2015 Tattersall’s Tiara.
Securing four wins and a three minors through ten career starts, the Fastnet Rock filly returned for convincing victories in the All Victorian Sprint Series Heat (1100m) and Listed Straight Six (1200m) leading into the Stradbroke Handicap.
Following two disappointing starts at Group 1 level, talented mare Srikandi delivered a thrashing win in the Stradbroke Handicap and has been nominated for a campaign swansong in the 2015 Tattersall’s Tiara.
The standout performer of the 2014 Brisbane Winter Carnival, Srikandi won each of the Listed Silk Stocking (1200m) on the Gold Coast, Listed Juanmo Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) before running third in the Stradbroke Handicap.
Returning this time for success in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m), the daughter of Dubawi was considered a leading fancy in both the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) and Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) but failed to make anything of an impact in either.
Kiwi Group 1 winner Diademe is yet to make anything of an impact since arriving in Australia but should be suited to the conditions of the 2015 Tattersall’s Tiara.
Caught wide on a heavy racing surface over the race’s entire 1600m, Diademe stamped herself as a serious racehorse when taking out the Group 1 NZ Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1600m) on April 4th.
Finishing mid-pack in each of the Queen Of The Turf Stakes and Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m), the Savabeel mare will probably need a good barrier draw on Wednesday to be competitive in the Tattersall’s Tiara.
Godolphin runner Hazard has undoubtedly found career-best form leading into the Tattersall’s Tiara and is sure to figure as a leading fancy when betting markets for the feature race open.
Winning four of her five starts this time in, the Flying Spur mare will be aiming for a third-consecutive black type win having taken out each of the Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) and the Dane Ripper Stakes most recently.
The 2015 Tattersall’s Tiara final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
