Gai Waterhouse Classic 2015 Field: Top Weight Scratched

Acceptances for Saturday’s Ipswich Cup Day races may have only closed on Wednesday morning but already there is a scratching from the 2015 Gai Waterhouse Classic field with top weight I’ve Got The Looks withdrawn from the sprint.

Bringing the Ipswich race card to a close as Race 8 at 4:32pm (AEST) on the weekend at the latest Queensland Winter Racing Carnival meeting, this year’s $100,000 Listed Sky Racing Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) originally attracted 15 fillies and mares.

Peter & Paul Snowden however have already taken out the 59kg top weight I’ve Got The Looks, the Choisir five-year-old having also drawn the outside alley (15) hampering her chances of atoning for a last start eighth at Doomben behind Peace Force in the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) from May 23.

The new top weight with 55kg is then the Kelso Wood-trained Real Surreal drawn a treat in barrier three for jockey Michael Cahill who takes over from Glen Boss in the saddle of the Real Saga four-year-old.

Real Surreal is second-up on Saturday having resumed on May 30 at Doomben with a fourth behind Dublin Lass in the Listed Bright Shadow Handicap (1200m) carrying 58kg from a nasty barrier 13 (of 16) draw.

Following in the Gai Waterhouse Classic weights is the only other galloper with more than the 54kg minimum, the John Dann-trained Tukiyo drawn in the new outside alley (14) carrying 54.5kg.

The Toowoomba-based Haradasun five-year-old has run third in two of her past three runs, the latest of which was in the Glenlogan Park Stakes when beaten under a length carrying two kilos extra to her allocated weight this weekend.

Also coming off last start placings are the Matthew Dunn-trained Write Cheek who won over 1350m at Doomben two back before a second in a fillies and mares handicap over 1400m on May 16, Toowoomba-based Murtajill four-year-old Grey Countess coming off a second at the Gold Coast when nosed out of a win on May 30 and Rex Lipp’s last start runner-up at Ipswich A Fine Drop Of Red.

A five-year-old daughter of Red Dazzler, A Fine Drop Of Red has a top record at the Ipswich track she returns to on Saturday boasting two wins and a second from her four previous runs at the course.

The season’s premier trainer Chris Waller also has a Gai Waterhouse Classic runner this winter in Champagne Cath jumping from barrier nine, the Street Sense four-year-old out to improve on a Bright Shadow sixth last start.

Other notable names in the field include the Kelly Doughty-trained Little Brown Horse drawn well in gate four who won at the Sunshine Coast two back defeating Write Cheek, Show A Heart four-year-old Discreet from the Kelly Schweida stables who has the inside alley with barrier one and the Clarry Conners-trained Sydney raider Fare Well who is second-up on the back of a fifth in the Bright Shadow Handicap in Brisbane.
