Jazz Song among 2015 Gai Waterhouse Classic Nominations

Defending champion Jazz Song is a dual nominee for Ipswich Cup Day in Queensland on Saturday including in the Gai Waterhouse Classic 2015, a race the Mick Price-trained mare won as a filly 12 months ago.

The now four-year-old daughter of Fastnet Rock is nominated for both the $175,000 Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) and the race she won last Queensland Winter Racing Carnival – the $100,000 Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m).

A quality handicap open to fillies and mares only, the Gai Waterhouse Classic attracted a bumper 21 nominations this year including Jazz Song who could attempt back-to-back wins.

She raced only last weekend at Doomben on Stradbroke Handicap Day in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) when fifth behind Hazard beaten two and a half lengths by the Tattersall’s Tiara-bound mare.

Jazz Song won the Gai Waterhouse Classic as a three-year-old and there are only two young fillies nominated to take on the older mares in this year’s edition with Elusive Catch and Mywayorthehighway.

Liam Birchley’s Elusive City filly Elusive Catch has improving to do on her form in Australia since being transferred from New Zealand to her Brisbane base, her latest run being a ninth when well-beaten finishing eight lengths off Bohemian Lily in the Group 2 The Roses (2020m) at Doomben on May 23.

Mywayorthehighway also comes off an unplaced run but it was a much closer finish with the Mick Mair-trained daughter of Swiss Ace crossing one and a half lengths away fifth behind Mohave in the Listed Queensland Day Plate (1200m) on May 30.

There are no last start winners nominated for the Gai Waterhouse Classic this winter but a host come off nice lead-up runs including the Kelso Wood-trained Real Surreal who ran fourth to Dublin Lass in the Listed Bright Shadow Handicap (1200m) from earlier in the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival and Matthew Dunn’s in-form five-year-old Write Cheek.

Other noteworthy early entries for the Ipswich Cup Day support act include the Clarry Conners-trained Fare Well who is also in the mix for the Eye Liner Stakes too, six-year-old Little Brown Horse and Peter & Paul Snowden’s I’ve Got The Looks.

Choisir mare I’ve Got The Looks was in top form winning back-to-back black types in Queensland including the Listed Junamo Stakes (1200m) on May 9 in Brisbane before her eighth when stepped up in class and distance behind Peace Force in the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) on May 23.

Also coming out of the Glenlogan Park Stakes straight into the Gai Waterhouse Classic if accepted is the Toowoomba-based Haradasun five-year-old Tukiyo who ran third when beaten under a length after jumping from a wide barrier 10 of 12 draw.
