2015 Eye Liner Stakes Nominations Feature Daph ‘N’ Alf

One of the key support races on the Ipswich Cup Day program this weekend is the Eye Liner Stakes 2015 for the sprinters where two of the unplaced runners from last Saturday’s Stradbroke Handicap.

A total of 16 gallopers make up the nominations for this year’s $175,000 Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) including Sacred Star and Smokin’ Joey who ran sixth and eighth respectively in Queensland’s richest race last weekend.

The $2 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) was won by last year’s beaten favourite Srikandi and a couple of the gallopers who failed to run in the money will get a shot at a consolation prize this weekend in the Eye Liner Stakes.

Tony Pike’s sixth past the post Sacred Star from New Zealand is looking to return to the winning form that saw the Flying Spur five-year-old post back-to-back Group 1 wins back home during the summer.

His two runs in Brisbane have produced a Doomben 10,000 fifth and then the Stradbroke sixth, improvement likely if he handles the short back-up with a nice drop back in class.

Another former Group 1 winner Smokin’ Joey meanwhile ran eighth in the Stradbroke Handicap beaten under four lengths on the back of a 14th in Adelaide’s Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m), a race he scored an upset in as a 40-1 shot the previous year.

There are a host of other runners coming off nice lead-ups into the Eye Liner Stakes, won last Queensland Winter Racing Carnival by Alma’s Fury who backed-up to also take out the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) on the Sunshine Coast last start.

Two come off a last start win with North Queensland galloper Daph ‘N’ Alf who saluted first-up at Mackay and Robert Heathcote’s Encosta De Lago seven-year-old Riva De Lago.

After a couple of below par runs during the summer, Riva De Lago returned to racing with a win in this year’s Glasshouse Handicap in mid-May over 1300m.

Just two mares are nominated to take on the boys in the Eye Liner this winter with the Clarry Conners-trained Fare Well who comes off a fifth behind Dublin Lass in the Listed Bright Shadow Handicap (1200m) from May 30 and Mick Price’s Jazz Song.

A four-year-old daughter of Fastnet Rock, Jazz Song drops down in grade if accepted on the short back-up this weekend after she ran two and a half lengths away fifth as a $41 outsider behind 2015 Tattersall’s Tiara-bound Hazard in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) at Doomben last Saturday.

Also coming off a top three finish last time out are the Tony Sears-trained God’s Own gelding Pillar Of Creation who ran third to Riva De Lago in the Glasshouse after a second in Toowoomba’s Weetwood Handicap and young Ulmann from the stables of Peter Moody.

Three-year-old Sebring colt Ulmann was fourth in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1800m) on the Gold Coast on Anzac Day before his trip to Caloundra on May 16 when second behind subsequent Queensland Oaks winning filly Winx in the Group 2 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m).

Among the other more notable Eye Liner Stakes nominees are the likes of Stuart Kendrick’s recent Prime Minister’s Cup winner Neo and Steel Zip who ran second over 1000m at the Sunshine Coast last weekend.
